Radio Host's On-Air Mistake Sparks Confusion and Apology
In a startling on-air error, former Pussycat Doll and Heart FM presenter Ashley Roberts mistakenly announced the death of legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke during a live broadcast. The 44-year-old radio host made the blunder while sharing entertainment news updates alongside co-hosts Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Thursday's program.
Confusion Between Two Actors Leads to Major Broadcast Error
Roberts told listeners that "Dawson's Creek's Dick Van Dyke has passed away," when she actually intended to reference actor James Van Der Beek, who died on Wednesday at age 48 following a three-year battle with colorectal cancer. The confusion between the two actors with similar-sounding names created immediate concern among listeners familiar with Van Dyke's recent 100th birthday celebration.
Co-hosts Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden quickly intervened to correct the record. Theakston emphasized the importance of accuracy during sensitive moments, stating: "Not Dick Van Dyke – come on. If you're going to do a sensitive moment, if you're going to do an obituary, you can't just say Dick Van Dyke." Holden added clarification that the beloved Mary Poppins star was indeed "alive."
Immediate Apology and Correction
Roberts promptly acknowledged her mistake, back-pedaling with an apology: "Yes, [he's alive] – he's 100 years old! Oh my gosh, we spoke about this, I'm so sorry." Theakston concluded the segment by reinforcing: "Unbelievably, he's very much still alive."
The timing of the error was particularly sensitive given Dick Van Dyke's recent milestone. The celebrated actor marked his centenary on December 13, 2025, and had recently discussed the lifestyle changes that contributed to his longevity. In December remarks, Van Dyke revealed: "I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality. If I liked something, I was going to overdo it. So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I'm still here."
The Actual Tragedy: James Van Der Beek's Passing
The news Roberts attempted to report concerned the genuine passing of actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in Dawson's Creek. His family announced his death on Wednesday night following his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis in 2023. The actor had publicly shared his diagnosis in November 2024.
Tributes poured in from colleagues and friends, including heartfelt words from Dawson's Creek co-star Katie Holmes. In a lengthy message, Holmes wrote: "Bravery, Compassion. Selflessness. Strength. An appreciation for life and the action taken to live life with the integrity that life is art – creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children – the journey of a hero. I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint on it."
Community Support for Van Der Beek's Family
A GoFundMe campaign established to support Van Der Beek's grieving family has raised over $1.6 million (£1.1 million) to help with significant financial strains resulting from medical expenses. The fundraising post explained: "In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time."
The broadcast incident highlights the challenges of live radio reporting and the importance of verifying information before sharing sensitive news with audiences. While Roberts' error caused temporary confusion, her immediate apology and correction helped clarify the situation for Heart FM listeners.
