Roblox Shooting Simulator Created by Canadian School Shooting Suspect
The 18-year-old suspect in a devastating high school shooting in British Columbia had previously developed a mass shooting simulator on the popular gaming platform Roblox, according to recent revelations. This disturbing discovery emerged following the tragic incident in Tumbler Ridge, which resulted in nine fatalities, including the shooter.
Details of the Virtual Simulator
The simulator, described as a "Mall experience," was accessible exclusively through Roblox Studio, a separate application designed for developers to create games. Within this virtual environment, users could pick up weapons and engage in shooting other players, all represented by Roblox-style avatars. The simulator reportedly recorded only seven visits, indicating limited exposure.
Users first identified the suspect's Roblox account and the associated game on Kiwi Farms, a website notorious for doxing and trolling activities. Canadian police later identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar in connection with the Wednesday attack.
Roblox's Response and Safety Measures
In a statement provided to the Guardian, Roblox confirmed the removal of the user account linked to the incident, along with any related content. The California-based company emphasized its commitment to supporting law enforcement investigations fully. Roblox also highlighted its safety protocols, which involve a combination of artificial intelligence and a dedicated team of safety specialists to review content before it becomes accessible to other users on the platform.
The Tumbler Ridge Tragedy
Wednesday's attack stands as one of Canada's deadliest school shootings since the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, which claimed the lives of 14 women. The victims in Tumbler Ridge included a teacher, five students, the suspect's mother, and her stepbrother. The suspect, who reportedly had a history of mental health issues, was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Broader Context of Gamified Violence
This incident is not the first time Roblox has faced criticism regarding its content. The platform, which allows millions of users to create and share their own video games, has been associated with controversies, including alleged Jeffrey Epstein-themed content accessible to children and a lawsuit in California concerning the facilitation of sexual exploitation and assault of minors.
While the links between violent video games and real-world mass shootings remain inconclusive, with large-scale studies showing at most a minor correlation, there is a growing trend of "gamified violence." This phenomenon involves extremists incorporating elements of video game design into actual attacks. Notable examples include the 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the 2022 racially motivated attack in Buffalo, New York, both of which were broadcast on platforms like Twitch, used for livestreaming video gameplay.
The Tumbler Ridge school shooting underscores ongoing concerns about how digital platforms may inadvertently facilitate or inspire violent acts, prompting renewed discussions about safety measures and the ethical responsibilities of gaming companies.
