In a significant development for the gaming community, Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed it will redesign a new Overwatch character following widespread criticism from fans and even the character's own voice actor. The decision comes as part of a major overhaul for the popular team-based shooter, which includes dropping the '2' from its title and introducing five new playable characters.
Fan Backlash Over Character Design
The character at the centre of the controversy is Anran, the older sister of existing Overwatch character Wuyang. Following her announcement as a playable character, fans quickly noted that her in-game model appeared significantly younger than her previous portrayals in animated trailers and tie-in comics. Specific complaints focused on her facial features being much rounder and softer, with a smaller nose than expected.
This prompted extensive discussion across social media platforms, with many players expressing disappointment that Anran's design seemed to follow conventional beauty standards rather than challenging them. The criticism gained particular momentum when fans created and shared alternative redesigns, highlighting what they believed would be more appropriate representations of the character.
Voice Actor Adds Weight to Criticism
The situation reached a crucial turning point when Fareeha Andersen, the voice actor portraying Anran, publicly shared her concerns. In a video posted on social media platform X, Andersen acknowledged that she agreed with the community's complaints about the character's design.
'I think in her comic and the cinematic, there was a precedent set by [her design],' Andersen explained. 'There was an unspoken promise that said, 'We're going to challenge the beauty standards that are plaguing and ransacking media these days.' ... And I think because of that precedent, people feel understandably let down.'
Andersen revealed she had shared her thoughts directly with the Overwatch development team and encouraged fans to continue voicing their opinions. She emphasised the importance of such discussions, stating: 'This is a hill worth dying on. It's worth speaking on, because I believe the more we speak up about the things that truly matter to us, the more we'll see ourselves reflected in the world around us.'
Official Response and Redesign Plans
Blizzard Entertainment has responded to the mounting criticism by confirming that Anran will receive an official redesign. Overwatch game director Aaron Keller announced the decision on social media, stating: 'The team is currently discussing what it will take to make Anran look and feel more like the fierce older sister that we all envisioned her to be.'
Keller indicated that the decision to redesign the character had been made shortly after Anran's initial reveal, but the development team wanted to confirm what changes were feasible before making a public announcement. He explained the complexity involved, noting: 'Our hero models are incredibly complicated and we really need to test out what we can do.'
The redesign will not delay Anran's addition to the game, which occurs as part of the new season launching today. However, the updated appearance is expected to be implemented before the end of the current season, which typically lasts approximately two months.
Broader Context of Overwatch Changes
This character redesign forms part of a substantial transformation for Overwatch, which sees the game dropping the '2' from its title nearly four years after Blizzard replaced the original Overwatch with Overwatch 2. The change acknowledges that the current iteration barely qualifies as a sequel, following a contentious launch, cancelled PvE plans, and a return to the original 6v6 format.
The new season introduces not only five new playable characters but also a new narrative arc called Reign of Talon, which will span six seasons throughout 2026. Additional features include new gameplay events, sub-roles for every character, and various other updates detailed on the Overwatch website.
Blizzard is resetting the season count back to season one, with plans to add another five characters throughout the coming year before beginning a new story arc in 2027. This comprehensive overhaul represents Blizzard's commitment to revitalising the Overwatch experience and responding to community feedback, as demonstrated by their willingness to address character design concerns raised by both players and voice actors.
