Discord Rolls Out Mandatory Age Verification with Facial Recognition and ID Scans

Discord, the popular social media and messaging platform favoured by video gamers, has announced a significant new policy requiring all of its 200 million global users to verify their age. In a blog post released on Monday, the startup revealed that all accounts will now default to a 'teen appropriate' setting, which restricts access to certain servers based on age. This move aims to enhance online safety and comply with evolving regulations, but it has sparked debates over privacy and security implications.

How the Age Verification Process Works

When a user attempts to verify their age, the Discord mobile app prompts them to either record a video selfie or scan a government-issued ID. The system employs artificial intelligence to estimate the individual's age, with instructions to look to the sides and open and close their mouth during the scan. According to Discord, whether a selfie or ID is used, the data is not stored on any server; it remains solely on the device and is deleted immediately after verification for user safety. The platform then communicates the results directly within the app, with messages such as 'We determined you're in the adult age group' to inform users of their status.

Understanding Discord and Its User Experience

Discord was founded by Jason Citron, a video game enthusiast and computer programmer, as a platform primarily for gamers to chat while playing. Unlike traditional social media sites like Facebook or Instagram, Discord lacks a central feed or timeline. Instead, users join servers tailored to specific interests or groups, which are further divided into topic-based channels. Notable large servers include Midjourney, an AI image generator, and communities focused on games like Marvel Rivals. There are also private, invite-only servers for more exclusive interactions.

Until users complete the age verification, sensitive content will be blurred, and access to certain servers will be blocked, similar to forum chat rooms. Additionally, direct messages from unknown users are automatically routed to a separate inbox that cannot be disabled, and friend requests from strangers trigger warnings to enhance security.

Regulatory Compliance and Past Loopholes

Discord has already implemented this policy in Australia and the United Kingdom in response to regulatory pressures. In Australia, this follows a social media ban for users under 16, while in the UK, it aligns with the Online Safety Act, which introduced age-verification requirements for pornography and social media platforms last year. However, when Discord began compliance efforts last year, users discovered a loophole allowing them to bypass verification by using photo mode in the video game Death Stranding. This issue has since been addressed and fixed by the platform.

Safety Concerns and Data Privacy Issues

Tech privacy experts have expressed alarm over the safety of age verification systems, particularly in light of a significant data breach in October. During this incident, hackers targeted a third-party verification platform used by Discord, leading to the leak of IDs from 70,000 users. Discord acknowledged that the compromised data may have included personal information, partial credit card details, and messages, though it confirmed that no discussions with customer service teams were exposed. This breach underscores the potential risks associated with storing and processing sensitive identification data, raising questions about the overall security of such verification methods.

As Discord moves forward with its age verification initiative, users and regulators alike will be closely monitoring its effectiveness and safety. The balance between protecting minors online and safeguarding user privacy remains a critical challenge in the digital age.
