Pizza Hut's Late-Night Opening Plan Sparks Backlash in South London
Pizza Hut Late Hours Plan Sparks Backlash

A South London Pizza Hut has applied to extend its delivery hours until 1am on weekdays and 2am on weekends, drawing strong opposition from a resident who lives opposite the shop. The resident described the proposed hours as "simply antisocial" and also claimed to have witnessed delivery drivers urinating in a nearby driveway, though this allegation has not been verified.

Current and Proposed Hours

The Pizza Hut in Charlton Village currently sells delivery pizza until 12:30am. The new application to Greenwich Council seeks to alter its premises licence to allow deliveries until 1am from Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The public opening hours will remain unchanged at 11am to midnight. The extra time is intended solely for delivery services such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo to bring food to customers at home.

Resident Concerns

Greenwich Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee C will consider the application on May 28. Only one resident, Stephanie Godbold, has formally objected. She stated that the extension would create an "unacceptable noise nuisance to residents" and highlighted that delivery bikes already operate noisily until midnight. Ms Godbold also expressed concerns about delivery drivers using a private driveway belonging to 34-44 The Village to park their bikes, blocking residents' access and bringing noise closer to sleeping areas. She added that she had witnessed drivers urinating in the driveway, which she called "antisocial (illegal) behaviour."

Local Councillor Support

Cllr Jo Van Den Broek, ward councillor for Charlton Village and Riverside, also objected on behalf of nearby residents. She noted that residents already suffer from noise and disturbance from delivery bikes late into the night and that additional hours would extend that disturbance into the small hours. Complaints about bike parking under residents' windows were also raised.

Police Response

The police raised no objections to the licence application. The Metropolitan Police initially expressed concerns but proposed that if Pizza Hut recorded CCTV footage throughout its opening hours, they would not object. Pizza Hut agreed to this condition.
