In a landmark move for sustainable logistics, Amazon has deployed the United Kingdom's largest fleet of electric heavy goods vehicles, with five state-of-the-art DAF electric trucks now operating from the company's new fulfilment centre in Tilbury, Essex.
The retail giant's electric vehicle rollout comes as part of a broader government push to decarbonise Britain's transport sector. These zero-emission trucks will make daily deliveries to Amazon's central London hubs, significantly reducing the company's carbon footprint in the capital.
Powering the Future of Logistics
Amazon has installed powerful 360kW charging infrastructure at its Tilbury facility, capable of fully charging these electric behemoths in approximately two hours. The company plans to rapidly expand this green fleet, with 18 additional electric HGVs expected to join the ranks by year's end.
This initiative represents Amazon's most significant investment in electric heavy goods vehicles in the UK to date, marking a crucial step in the company's ambitious 'Shipment Zero' strategy, which aims to make all Amazon shipments net-zero carbon.
Government Backing for Green Transport
The deployment aligns perfectly with the UK government's broader environmental agenda. Through the Freight Innovation Fund, the Department for Transport has been actively supporting the development and adoption of cutting-edge green technologies within the logistics sector.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper emphasised the importance of such private sector investments, stating they are 'essential for building a cleaner, more efficient freight industry' while supporting economic growth.
A Broader Electric Commitment
Beyond heavy goods vehicles, Amazon continues to expand its electric delivery capabilities across the board. The company now operates over 1,000 electric vans across the UK and has established a network of micro-mobility hubs in city centres.
These smaller hubs enable deliveries via electric cargo bikes and on-foot couriers, creating a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to sustainable urban logistics that sets a new standard for the industry.
