Co-op Launches Flexible Checkouts in 150 Stores, Boosting Customer Choice
Co-op Rolls Out Flexible Checkouts in 150 UK Stores

Co-op Introduces Flexible Checkout Systems Across 150 UK Stores

Co-op is set to revolutionize the shopping experience by rolling out new "flexi checkouts" in 150 stores across the United Kingdom by April. This innovative system offers customers the flexibility to choose between self-service and cashier-led checkout options, aiming to reduce waiting times and improve overall service efficiency.

Dual-Screen Technology Enhances Customer Experience

The flexi checkouts feature dual-screen technology that seamlessly switches between modes, ensuring till points remain operational at all hours. Trials have demonstrated that this system can significantly cut queue lengths while enabling staff to assist more customers with inquiries and other needs.

David Tyas, Co-op's head of operations support centre and innovation, emphasized the company's commitment to customer preferences: "We understand that many customers value interacting with our friendly colleagues, while others prioritize a quick transaction. Our latest checkout technology replaces existing tills with the added flexibility to accommodate both, reinforcing our dedication to our physical store estate in high streets and communities."

Additional Features and National Retail First

Beyond the flexible checkout options, the digital screens will display customers' price savings, deals, and promotions. They will also support parcel collection services, adding convenience for shoppers. Co-op claims that this rollout marks a "national grocery retailer first," highlighting its leadership in retail innovation.

This investment coincides with Co-op's confirmation that 18 new stores will open in the first quarter of 2026, as reported by the Express. The expansion underscores the retailer's ongoing commitment to strengthening its presence in local communities.

The introduction of flexi checkouts addresses a growing demand for personalized shopping experiences, catering to diverse customer preferences and enhancing operational efficiency in the competitive supermarket sector.
