Two adults have been confirmed dead after a powerful explosion at a house on Sterncourt Road in Bristol, prompting a large-scale evacuation of nearby residents. Avon and Somerset Police announced the fatalities on the morning of May 3, 2026, following reports of a loud 'bang' that shook the neighborhood.
Evacuation and Cordon
Emergency services established a cordon on Sterncourt Road in the Frenchay area, advising people to avoid the vicinity. Dozens of residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, with many taking shelter at a local Harvester pub. Police urged the public to stay away while investigations continued.
Witness Accounts
A witness reported hearing a loud bang around 6:30 a.m. and went to investigate, only to be told to 'get inside' by armed police officers. Another resident told the Mirror that he and his partner were helping elderly neighbors evacuate to the pub. 'We have been told to stay in the Harvester until further notice. We may not be able to go home tonight,' he said.
A bomb squad was deployed to the scene, and smoke was seen rising from one house. One resident told BristolLive: 'There were two or three unmarked police cars and a number of ambulances and police vehicles, and now the bomb squad is there.'

Avon and Somerset Police issued a statement: 'A cordon is in place as emergency services respond to reports of an incident at a house near Frenchay. People from a number of properties in Sterncourt Road are being evacuated as a precaution. We'd ask people to avoid the area at this time.'
