In the eastern Aegean, beyond the party islands and tourist crowds, lies Samos: a Greek island of pine-covered mountains, tranquil villages, and genuine experiences. This lesser-visited gem, roughly the size of Andorra, offers history, pristine beaches, and local cuisine without the crowds of Santorini or Mykonos.
New Direct Flights from the UK
Jet2 has launched direct flights to Samos from London Stansted, Birmingham, and Manchester for summer 2026. Fares start from €56 (£48). The flying programme includes twice-weekly services from Manchester (1 May to 30 October), a weekly service from Birmingham (4 May to 26 October), and twice-weekly services from London Stansted (7 May to 29 October). These flights eliminate the need for a ferry transfer, making the island more accessible than ever.
History and Culture
Samos is steeped in ancient history. It is said to be the birthplace of the goddess Hera, and the UNESCO-listed Temple of Hera still stands. The island was also home to the mathematician Pythagoras, born around 570 BC in Pythagoria. Visitors can explore the ancient tunnel and amphitheatre, or walk the same paths as the philosopher.
Villages and Local Life
Charming towns like Kokkari and Vourliotes feature cobblestone lanes and intimate squares. Pythagoria offers waterside dining at Taverna Orexi, serving succulent chicken and tzatziki, and the famous 'blue street' with sea-themed murals. Unlike busier islands, these spots remain blissfully calm.
Beaches and Nature
Most beaches are pebbly, but sandy options like Kokkari and Psili Ammos draw locals. Livadaki Beach, about 10 km from Vathy, offers azure waters, soft white sand, and a sheltered cove. The water is warm and shallow, ideal for families. Walking trails, such as the route to Panagia Spyliani Monastery, allow visitors to explore the forested mountains and encounter local beekeepers.
Wine and Dining
Samos is famous for its muscat wine. The Metaxa Liknon vineyard offers tastings for €40 (90 minutes) with spectacular views. According to legend, Dionysus taught the Samians winemaking. The Samos Wine Museum provides further insight. Local tavernas in the hills serve small dishes and salads; visitors are encouraged to order gradually and savour the flavours.
Accommodation and Relaxation
Casa Cook, an adults-only resort near the airport, offers rooms from £295 per night. It features multiple pools, a daily yoga session, a small spa with steam room, and a restaurant serving buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Highlights include octopus salad and Gemista risotto. On Saturdays, guests can book a beachside Samian cuisine experience.
Growing Popularity
Interest in Samos is rising. TUI reported a 118% year-on-year increase in bookings following the launch of new UK flights. While Greece welcomed 35.95 million tourists in 2024, most visited Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu, and Crete. Samos remains a hidden gem, but its tranquillity may not last long.
