Sail-Thru Fish and Chips: UK Pub Serves Meals to Boats

McMonagles Fish and Chips, a family-run restaurant on the Forth & Clyde Canal in Clydebank, Scotland, has introduced a 'sail-thru' service, allowing customers to order and receive meals directly from their boats. The unique concept, which has gained popularity on TikTok and Instagram, lets paddleboarders, kayakers, and canoeists pull up to the restaurant's window and collect sustainably caught fish and hand-cut chips without leaving their vessels.

Unique Dining Experience on the Water

The restaurant, which opened in 1993, initially floated on the 35-mile-long canal before being permanently secured with cement. It has become known for its quirky menu items, including Frickles (battered pickles), battered baked potato with macaroni, and battered baked potato with steak pie. McMonagles, which describes itself as 'the world's most unique fish & chip restaurant,' also offers gluten-free options, pizzas, vegan pizzas, loaded fries, burgers, and kids' meals, as well as halal choices.

In an exclusive to Metro, the restaurant revealed plans to introduce a wall menu and a QR code for easier ordering, along with baskets to pass meals down to customers on the water. The eatery was nominated for the Scottish Fish & Chip Awards 2026 in July and operates Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-9pm, with 'sail-thru', delivery, and takeaway services available from 11am-9pm.

Growing Popularity and Local Attractions

The quirky eatery has gone viral on social media, prompting calls for more sail-thru restaurants across the UK. For now, however, McMonagles remains the only one of its kind. Visitors looking to make a day of it in Clydebank can explore the Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery, which has showcased local history since 1980, or enjoy hiking views over the River Clyde and Loch Lomond on the Kilpatrick Hills. Glasgow, just a half-hour drive away, offers attractions such as Glasgow Cathedral, botanic gardens, and the Glasgow Science Centre, complete with an IMAX theatre. Glasgow is also home to over 260 pubs, making it an ideal destination for a night out.

Future Plans and Impact

The introduction of the wall menu and QR code is expected to streamline the ordering process for customers on the water, while the baskets will facilitate easier delivery of meals. McMonagles' innovative approach has not only attracted local attention but also national interest, positioning it as a standout destination for both food and novelty. As the trend gains momentum, it remains to be seen whether other establishments will follow suit, but for now, McMonagles stands alone in offering this distinctive sail-thru experience.
