Port Isaac named one of UK's prettiest places, with Doc Martin links
Port Isaac: UK's prettiest village with Doc Martin links

Port Isaac, a small seaside village in Cornwall, has been named the second prettiest place to live in Britain by letting agents Aston & Co, just behind Ambleside in Cumbria. The village, known for its car-free lanes and dramatic clifftop setting, also serves as the iconic backdrop for the ITV drama series Doc Martin.

Why Port Isaac stands out

The village features pastel-hued cottages, a shimmering turquoise cove, and winding coastal alleyways. Aston & Co noted: "It’s easy to see why the producers chose this backdrop; the traditional fishing village has classic Cornish white-washed houses, rolling green hills and turquoise waters."

Its picturesque harbour, known as The Platt, remains a bustling fishing port where vessels deliver their daily catch to nearby eateries and pubs, including Outlaw's Fish Kitchen and The Mote. The surrounding rolling hills and whitewashed cottages add to its charm.

Film set and cultural roots

Port Isaac is the filming location for the popular ITV series Doc Martin, making it a familiar sight for many viewers. It is also the birthplace of the folk ensemble Fisherman's Friends, known for their sea shanties, who have been performing together since 1995.

One tourist who visited this summer wrote on TripAdvisor: "Really lovely place to visit and a top Cornwall attraction you must visit. Saw the house Doc Martin used for the series and walked the old streets, and it was so beautiful. Quite a steep walk from the car park down to the town, so if you struggle with walking, bear that in mind."

Unique features and visitor tips

The village is home to one of Britain's narrowest passages, Squeeze Belly Alley, measuring just 18 inches wide. Many of its steep lanes do not have car access, and there is no public parking at the bottom of the village due to the challenging terrain, preserving its idyllic, car-free atmosphere.

Despite its small size, Port Isaac offers a range of seaside shops, including Peapod, Boat House, and Port Isaac Pottery, as well as bakery goods at Harbour Treats and Nicki B's Pasty Shop, and a variety of seafood restaurants.

Another visitor shared: "Pretty Cornish village, typical of the genre. Quaint, narrow streets. Interesting shops and galleries. Don't miss the Chapel Cafe on the road up to Doc Martin's house." A holidaymaker also commented: "Port Isaac is best known as the city in which Doc Martin is filmed, but it is a lovely place to visit even if you are unfamiliar with the show. I suggest a highly rated walking tour with someone who will talk about points of interest in town, in addition to those related to the show."

The village's combination of natural beauty, cultural significance, and unique features continues to attract visitors and recognition, cementing its status as a top UK destination.
