Larnaca: Winter Sun with £26 Flights

Your Perfect Winter Sun Escape Awaits in Larnaca

If you are dreaming of a last-minute winter break that offers relaxation without draining your savings, set your sights on Larnaca. This sun-drenched city on the southern coast of Cyprus is the ideal antidote to the British chill, promising serene vibes and pleasantly warm weather.

A Coastal Haven of Peace and Pleasant Climates

While it is just a 40-minute drive from the bustling party hub of Ayia Napa, Larnaca has earned the fitting nickname of the ‘city of peace’. It is the perfect base for travellers seeking a more laid-back and tranquil atmosphere.

The climate is a major draw, with temperatures reaching a balmy 22°C in November and still comfortable 19°C highs in December. Getting there is surprisingly affordable; in November, one-way easyJet flights from London Luton were found for just £26.

From Sandy Shores to Ancient History

Larnaca boasts an impressive 18 stunning beaches to explore. The main stretch, Finikoudes Beach, features a 600-metre sandy coastline lined with palm trees. For families, Kastela Beach offers clear, shallow waters, while Yiannades Beach is a peaceful cove known for its warm waters and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Adventure-seekers should head to Mackenzie Beach, where you can try jet skiing, parasailing, and water skiing. You can hire a SUP board for €15 (£13.21) per day or book private windsurfing lessons for €100 (£88) per day.

Diving enthusiasts will be in their element, as Larnaca is home to the famous Zenobia Wreck, a dive site from the 1980s known for its great visibility and weak currents, making it suitable for both experts and novices.

A Tapestry of Culture and Cuisine

The city’s ‘peaceful’ moniker has deep roots; it is the birthplace of Zeno of Citium, the ancient Greek philosopher who founded the Stoic School of thinking around 300 BCE.

History buffs can explore the 9th-century Church of Saint Lazarus, which supposedly houses the tomb of its biblical namesake. Larnaca Castle, a medieval fortress, now serves as a museum and can be explored for €2.50 (£2.20).

Other key sites include the stunning Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, built in 648 AD, and the Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 7th millennium BC, with entry also costing €2.50.

When hunger strikes, the Finikoudes area offers a diverse food scene. From traditional Cypriot tavernas serving souvlaki and halloumi to international fare, there is something for every palate. The city also has a significant Lebanese influence, with restaurants like the highly-rated Maqam Al-Sultan serving authentic mezzes and hot appetisers.

Planning Your Affordable Getaway

easyJet is not the only airline serving this Cypriot gem. A Wizz Air flight from London Gatwick was also found for £40.99, with a journey time of just over four and a half hours.

Accommodation is equally budget-friendly. The three-star La Veranda Hotel, located 350 yards from the beach, offers a double room with a balcony for £64 per night. For a more upscale stay, the four-star Leonardo Boutique Hotel Larnaca is available for around £100 per night.
