Dubai Expats Euthanize and Abandon Healthy Pets to Escape Iranian Strikes

As Iranian missiles continue to target neighboring Gulf countries, a disturbing trend has emerged among expatriates in Dubai. Pet owners are increasingly abandoning their animals on the streets or requesting euthanasia for healthy pets to facilitate their rapid evacuation from the conflict zone. This crisis is placing immense strain on local animal shelters and rescue organizations, which are struggling to cope with the influx of abandoned cats and dogs.

Shelters Overwhelmed by Surge in Abandonments

Veterinarians in Dubai have reported a significant increase in inquiries about euthanizing pets as the conflict persists. Many owners, facing the urgency of fleeing, are opting to leave their animals behind without proper care. K9 Friends Dubai, an organization dedicated to rehoming dogs in the United Arab Emirates, has been overwhelmed with reports of abandonment. The situation has reached a critical point, with shelters operating beyond capacity and unable to accommodate all the animals in need.

Aditi Gouri, owner of The Barking Lot pet boarding service in Dubai, highlighted the severity of the crisis. Volunteers at animal rescue centers have reported hundreds more abandoned pets than usual, which is leaving shelters at breaking point with some now unable to care for all the animals, she explained. The Barking Lot is attempting to remain flexible, but the sheer volume of abandoned pets is overwhelming available resources.

Heartbreaking Scenes of Desertion and Euthanasia

Photos of dogs tied to lamp posts without food or water have circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the plight of these abandoned animals. In some cases, owners have taken even more drastic measures. A volunteer at The Barking Lot revealed, Some vets have even confirmed that owners are coming in to euthanise healthy pets because they don’t want to deal with relocation costs or paperwork.

The crisis extends beyond Dubai's city limits. Residents attempting to flee through Oman have faced additional challenges, as border restrictions prohibit taking pets across. This has led to numerous cats and dogs being abandoned in the desert, left to fend for themselves in harsh conditions.

Global Context and Criticism of Pet Abandonment

War Paws, a charity that supports animals during conflicts, notes that pet abandonment during wartime is not a new phenomenon. CEO Louise Hastie stated, It’s happening across Iraq and Ukraine as well... some people just don’t see pets the way we do. She criticized the actions of some owners, emphasizing, Abandoning pets at the border or on the streets, not even leaving them with the vet – there’s really no excuse for it. Dubai is an affluent country.

The conflict has also stranded thousands of Britons throughout the Middle East, with over 100,000 registering their presence with the Foreign Office amid evacuation efforts. Large areas of airspace remain closed due to the fighting, and previously safe tourism destinations like Dubai have come under direct missile attack, exacerbating the urgency for residents to leave.

Amidst this chaos, poignant notes left with abandoned animals underscore the desperation of pet owners. One such note, found with a box of kittens and their mother, read, I am travelling back to my country because of the situation going on here. I tried to call, but no one picked up my calls, so I got to your location. I am so sorry for standing in front of your gate.
