The long-awaited reopening of Camden's legendary LGBTQ+ venue The Black Cap has been pushed back to early 2026 after builders discovered additional structural problems within the historic building.
Latest Delay for Iconic Venue
The Black Cap's revival has encountered another setback, with the anticipated reopening now scheduled for February or March 2026 rather than the previously expected December 2025. The delay comes as construction teams identified "more structural issues" that require attention before the venue can safely welcome back patrons.
This represents the latest in a series of postponements for the beloved Camden High Street establishment. The venue was initially tipped for a Christmas 2024 reopening, which was later pushed to summer 2025 and then December 2025 before the current delay to early 2026.
Decade-Long Campaign for Revival
The Black Cap abruptly closed in 2015, ending its run as one of London's flagship gay bars that dated back to the 1960s. The venue had become a haven for drag artists and cabaret performers, hosting legendary acts including Lily Savage, Regina Fong, and comedic duo Hinge and Bracket.
Almost immediately after its closure, a grassroots campaign launched to save the venue. Campaigners successfully fought off attempts to convert the building into housing and secured its status as an Asset of Community Value. The building's current owner, who took over in 2021, has been praised for working closely with the community.
Construction Challenges and Community Support
In an Instagram post from October 23, The Black Cap's management acknowledged the delays, thanking followers for their "continued patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement." They explained that "some of the older parts of the building required more extensive restoration than originally anticipated," and modern compliance requirements had also contributed to the timeline adjustment.
The Facebook group We Are The Black Cap confirmed that "unforeseen structural issues arose that have delayed the reopening," though they emphasised that "it's very much happening and it will reopen."
When it does reopen, The Black Cap will return as an LGBTQ+ pub and performance venue with the added feature of a quality bed and breakfast, allowing visitors to "not only come to the legendary Black Cap but stay at the legendary and original 'Palladium of Drag.'"
The venue's revival represents a significant victory for London's LGBTQ+ community, which has seen numerous cherished venues close in recent years. The Black Cap joins other iconic LGBTQ+ spaces including the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Two Brewers, and Admiral Duncan in London's queer nightlife history.
