Resourceful Traveler Explores Two Countries in 24 Hours for Under £100

A savvy traveler has demonstrated how to experience two of Europe's most expensive destinations within a single day while spending less than £100. Aleksander Sikora, a 41-year-old retail employee trainer from Farnham, Surrey, meticulously planned a whirlwind adventure to both Nice and Monaco during his two days off work.

Strategic Planning Made the Adventure Possible

Aleksander secured return flights from Gatwick to Nice with Easyjet for just £48, pre-booked parking at Gatwick for £13, and arranged accommodation at a hostel in Nice costing only £19 per night. He departed on Friday, March 13 at 8:30 AM, carrying a rucksack containing his passport, sandwiches, and a water bottle to minimize expenses throughout his journey.

The father-of-two explained his motivation: "I saw a lot of historical things, if you like that kind of history it's great. I studied history for three years, it's a passion of mine and there is lots to discover."

Monaco Exploration on a Shoestring Budget

Upon arriving in Nice, Aleksander immediately caught a £6 train to Monaco, dedicating his first day to discovering the famous microstate renowned for its stunning architecture and wealth. He visited numerous free attractions including The Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate and the Prince's Palace of Monaco.

Throughout the day, he sustained himself with packed sandwiches and sausage rolls from his rucksack, purchasing only a £3.50 slice of pizza from a market stall. He explored the area surrounding Monte Carlo's casino and encountered the Promenade des Champions, featuring golden footprints commemorating award-winning footballers.

Nice Discovery and Cultural Encounters

Returning to Nice by train for £5, Aleksander visited the Notre-Dame de Nice after dark when the historic basilica illuminates in spectacular colors. His £19-per-night hostel accommodation included breakfast of croissants, baguettes, and coffee, and provided an unexpected cultural experience as he shared the space with seven other travelers from around the world.

"I am from Poland and somehow one of the other men in the hostel was too!" Aleksander noted. "Another of the men from the hostel suggested going to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral so the next day that was what I did."

Second Day Adventures and Return Journey

On his second day, Aleksander visited the Russian Orthodox Cathedral (free entry), gathered additional snacks and drinks from a nearby supermarket for £2, and climbed to the Colline du Chateau for sweeping views across Nice. He then visited a museum to learn more about Nice's history before walking approximately six miles back to the airport.

"That was another six miles or so, but I just looked around the streets, chilled out and relaxed," he said. "I put my headphones in, and just thought about nothing, enjoying my break from work."

Complete Cost Breakdown and Travel Philosophy

Aleksander's entire adventure totaled approximately £100, with his detailed expenses including:

  • Return flight ticket: £48
  • Car park at Gatwick: £13
  • Night in Nice with breakfast: £19
  • Train from Nice to Monaco: £6
  • Train from Monaco to Nice: £5
  • Half a pizza in Monaco: £3.50
  • Croissant and coffee in Nice: £3
  • Supermarket water and snacks: £2

He walked over 30 miles during his two-day adventure but remained enthusiastic about the experience. "The main beauty of the trip was the architecture, all the different cultures," Aleksander reflected. "You can't compare them but every place is unique, and you can find beauty everywhere. I love to explore."

Aleksander returned to Gatwick by 10 PM on his 9 PM flight and was home in bed by 11:30 PM, feeling rejuvenated and prepared for work the next morning. His journey demonstrates how strategic planning, budget accommodations, and self-catering can make even Europe's most expensive destinations accessible to cost-conscious travelers.
