London may return to sweltering temperatures, according to a weather expert. The capital was hit by boiling 35°C temperatures around two weeks ago during an unprecedented heatwave.
At the time, the Met Office said: “Today will be the hottest day in May in the UK in our temperature records, with highs of 35°C expected. The current May record is 32.8°C. Records are usually only broken by tenths of a degree, making this heatwave unprecedented for the time of year.”
The Met Office also forecasts a hot weekend this weekend, with 25°C on Saturday (June 13) and 24°C on Sunday (June 14). However, next weekend could have the ‘potential of a June record,’ according to Jim Dales of the British Weather Services, who exclusively told MyLondon that thermometers could reach 35°C again.
“If that comes off, then obviously that supersedes what happens this weekend by a long stretch,” he said.
The climate crisis, caused by carbon pollution from fossil fuels, is making every heatwave more intense and more likely to occur. While temperatures of 30°C were once unusual in the UK, even in the height of summer, they are becoming more common.
Hot temperatures are likely to persist in the UK and Europe. According to the latest European State of the Climate report, Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world. The weather will be volatile over the next week, with everything from sun to heavy rain. The Met Office's forecast for London is below.
