Crisp Shortage Threatens Major Brands as Factory Staff Vote to Strike
Supermarket supplies of some of Britain's most beloved crisp brands could be severely disrupted following a decisive vote for industrial action by factory workers in the North East. Shoppers who enjoy Hula Hoops, McCoy's, Pom-Bears or Discos may soon find empty shelves where these popular snacks normally reside.
Industrial Action Over Pay and Safety Concerns
The GMB Union has confirmed that dozens of KP Snacks staff at the company's Teesside production facility have voted overwhelmingly to walk out. This industrial action stems from an ongoing dispute regarding the imposition of additional duties without corresponding pay increases or proper consultation with the workforce.
Workers have expressed serious concerns about recent operational changes that they believe have compromised workplace safety standards. Additionally, management has reportedly reduced process workers in the crisps and snacks division to just a single break per shift, further exacerbating tensions on the factory floor.
Potential Impact on Consumer Supplies
Paul Clark, GMB organiser, emphasised the critical role these employees play in maintaining production: "These workers are skilled, experienced and absolutely vital to keeping KP Snacks' production lines running and supermarket shelves stocked."
He added a clear warning to management: "If the company wants to avoid empty shelves and disruption, it needs to return to the table with a serious offer that properly recognises the work these staff do."
The union will now meet with members to determine specific strike dates, potentially triggering the most significant crisp supply disruption in recent years.
Company Response and Contingency Planning
A KP Snacks spokesperson acknowledged the developing situation, stating: "We are aware that a small number of GMB‑represented colleagues at our Teesside site have begun action short of strike."
The company emphasised their commitment to resolving the dispute: "We value our Teesside team and the important contribution they make, and we remain committed to working constructively with them and the GMB to reach a resolution."
KP Snacks has assured customers that contingency plans are in place to minimise potential disruption, though the effectiveness of these measures remains untested against full-scale industrial action.
Broader Context of Industrial Relations
This dispute emerges against a backdrop of increasing industrial action across multiple sectors of the UK economy. The crisp manufacturing sector, which has generally enjoyed stable labour relations, now faces its own significant challenge as workers demand:
- Proper compensation for additional duties
- Restoration of adequate break periods
- Improved safety standards in production facilities
- Meaningful consultation on operational changes
As negotiations continue between union representatives and company management, consumers face the prospect of limited availability for some of the nation's favourite snack foods during what could become an extended period of industrial action.
