A coalition of more than 30 organisations is set to launch a national campaign in Canberra calling for stronger policies and incentives to help Australian households electrify their homes and vehicles, a move they say could save families up to $5,000 a year.
The campaign, linked to the international Electrify Now initiative, will be unveiled at Parliament House. It follows a push related to COP31 to raise the global electrification rate from about 20% to 35% by 2035.
Campaign Seeks Federal Policy Shift
Groups including Energy Consumers Australia, the Electric Vehicle Council, Farmers for Climate Action, and Rewiring Australia will launch the campaign, urging changes to help more Australians replace equipment powered by gas, petrol, or diesel.
Jeremy Sung, policy head at the Energy Efficiency Council, said the federal government needs to send a clear signal that electrification is the future of the energy system. “At the moment, federal policy is sending mixed messages,” Sung said.
Potential Savings and Global Context
The campaign comes as part of a broader international effort, with the COP31 push aiming to accelerate the transition to electric technologies worldwide. According to the organisations, electrifying homes and cars could deliver substantial financial benefits to Australian households.
The groups argue that current federal policies are not aligned with the goal of widespread electrification, which they see as essential for reducing emissions and cutting household energy costs.
