Spotify has released a new time capsule feature that allows listeners to view their entire music history on the platform, including the very first day they joined. The feature was launched on Tuesday to celebrate the app's 20th anniversary, giving users a chance to explore data from their earliest days on the streaming service.
All Time Top Songs Playlist
Alongside the time capsule, Spotify created an All Time Top Songs Playlist, which compiles each listener's top 120 tracks along with play counts. Users can also see the first song they ever streamed, and for some, the results have been surprising. Audience writer Steve Charnock commented, 'There might be a bug in this, y'know.' Spotify revealed that he listened to 7,115 minutes of an artist named Nificent, who has only four monthly listeners. 'I also have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA who he is,' Charnock added.
For Metro reporter Sarah Hooper, the top-streamed song of all time was 'Cocky AF' by Megan Thee Stallion, a result she found unsurprising. 'I have a hot girl summer every year,' she said. SEO reporter Andy Gaudion's first streamed song was 'Another Day of Sun' from the La La Land soundtrack, while his top-streamed song was 'Runnin'' from the Creed 2 soundtrack. As a self-proclaimed movie buff, the results were expected. Music reporter Danni Scott's top-streamed song was 'Defying Gravity' from the original Broadway cast of Wicked, with 'Guns and Ships' from Hamilton as a close second.
How to Access the Feature
Users can find the time capsule by opening the Spotify app and searching for 'Spotify 20' or 'Party of the Year(s)'. The feature is part of Spotify's 20th anniversary celebrations.
Most Streamed Artists of All Time
Earlier this year, Spotify revealed that Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny are the most-streamed artists of all time since the platform launched. The stars topped the Spotify At 20: The Most Streamed Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks Of All Time list. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny also topped the most-streamed albums list with his 2022 record Un Verano Sin Ti. Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd appeared three times in the most-streamed albums list: Starboy at number two, After Hours at number five, and Beauty Behind the Madness at number 20.
Spotify's Growth Despite Price Hikes
In April, the Swedish music streaming group announced a jump in subscribers despite raising prices in the UK and other major markets. Spotify reported a higher-than-expected 12% rise in monthly active users, reaching 761 million in the first three months of the year, and a 9% increase in paying subscribers to 293 million. These gains came despite recent price increases: UK premium subscriptions rose by 8.3% (or £1) to £12.99 per month as of November, while family plans increased by £2 to £21.99 per month.
