Sony has announced a price increase for PlayStation Plus in the UK, set to take effect on May 20, 2026. The move comes as the company seeks to maximize profitability amid rising costs and a maturing PlayStation 5 lifecycle.
New Pricing Details
The new prices have been revealed for one-month and three-month subscriptions, which are assumed to be for the PS Plus Essential tier. A one-month subscription will now cost £7.99, up from £6.99, while a three-month subscription rises to £21.99 from £19.99. This represents a 10% to 14% increase. Sony has not yet disclosed the new annual price, but based on the increases, it is expected to be between £65 and £70, up from the current £59.99.
The price changes apply to new subscribers or existing subscribers who change their plan or let their subscription lapse. Current subscribers will not see an immediate increase.
Impact on Gamers
PS Plus Essential is required for online multiplayer on PlayStation consoles, meaning many gamers will have to pay more to continue playing online games. The price rise is part of a broader trend in the gaming industry, where subscription services are becoming more expensive. Sony has previously indicated that it would adjust pricing dynamically to maximize profitability.
The increase is also influenced by the ongoing memory crisis and tariffs affecting hardware costs. Console manufacturers like Nintendo have also hinted at price increases for the Switch 2, though specific UK prices have not been announced.
While the price hike is understandable from a business perspective, it is likely to frustrate gamers who are already facing higher costs for games and accessories. Traditionally, hardware prices decrease over a console's lifecycle, but current economic conditions have reversed this trend.
Sony has confirmed that the price increase applies in select regions, including the UK, US, and Europe. The company has not yet announced prices for the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers.
