iOS 26.5: Encryption, Maps Ads, Pride Wallpaper

Apple has released its latest iOS 26.5 update, bringing significant security enhancements and new features to millions of iPhone users. The update includes end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, a redesigned Apple Maps experience with ads and suggestions, a new animated Pride wallpaper, and easier pairing for Apple accessories.

End-to-End RCS Encryption

One of the most notable additions is end-to-end encryption for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages. This feature ensures that messages sent between iPhones and Android devices are securely encrypted, preventing interception during transmission. Currently in beta, it requires iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and the latest Google Messages on Android. Users will see a lock icon on encrypted conversations.

Apple and Google have collaborated on this encryption technology for some time, aiming to provide a more secure messaging experience across platforms.

Apple Maps Overhaul

Apple Maps receives a major update with Suggested Places, offering recommendations based on the user's location and recent searches. Additionally, the app now includes ads linked to these suggestions, helping Apple compete with Google Maps' Gemini integration. This move is seen as an effort to enhance navigation and discovery within the app.

New Pride Luminance Wallpaper

In honor of Pride Month, iOS 26.5 introduces a dynamic wallpaper called 'Pride Luminance,' inspired by the LGBTQ+ flag colors. Users can customize the animated wallpaper with 12 different colors. The theme is also available on Apple Watch with watchOS 26.5.

Magic Pairing for Accessories

Apple's Magic Keyboard, mouse, and trackpad can now be paired with an iPhone more easily. Simply connect the accessory via USB-C, and it will pair automatically. After the first pairing, users can disconnect the cable and use Bluetooth without additional setup. However, this feature only works with Apple devices; non-Apple accessories still require traditional Bluetooth pairing.

App Store Subscription Changes

iOS 26.5 introduces a new subscription option for app developers, allowing users to pay for annual subscriptions in monthly installments. For example, a £100 annual subscription could be spread over 12 months. Apple has not yet detailed whether this will replace existing options or be an additional choice.

How to Install iOS 26.5

To update, go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions. The update is available now for compatible iPhone models.
