The cryptocurrency investor behind a £5 million gift to Nigel Farage and the largest ever donation to the Reform Party has been named as one of the United Kingdom's wealthiest billionaires. Christopher Harborne, a new entrant on the 2026 Sunday Times Rich List, is ranked as the sixth richest man in Britain with an estimated fortune of £18.2 billion.
Harborne has broken records for his political contributions to Reform. Although he has lived and worked in Thailand for more than two decades, he has invested heavily in financial companies, including Tether, the crypto platform with an estimated valuation of roughly $200 billion. His actual wealth may be even larger than the Rich List estimate, as some assets are held overseas or could not be identified by researchers.
The £5 Million Gift to Nigel Farage
Harborne came into the public spotlight after gifting £5 million to Nigel Farage in 2024. Farage is now facing a parliamentary investigation for failing to declare the donation. He insists the money was not connected to his political activities and was necessary to cover private security costs for the rest of his life. Farage accepted the funds in early 2024, and on May 10 of that year, he completed the purchase of a £1.42 million house.
When asked about the unusual size of the gift, Farage told The Sun: 'It's very unusual for someone to give up 27 years of their life to campaign for something. This was given to me on a completely unconditional basis, but frankly it was given as a reward for campaigning for Brexit for 27 years.' If found to have committed a serious breach of parliamentary declaration rules, he could be suspended from the House of Commons.
Reform UK's Response
A Reform UK spokesperson stated: 'Mr Farage's office is in communications with the parliamentary commissioner for standards. He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken. We look forward to this being put to bed once and for all.'
Record-Breaking Donations to Reform
In addition to the personal gift to Farage, Harborne has donated millions directly to Reform UK. Notably, in August 2025, he made a £9 million donation, the largest single donation in history to a political party from a living person.
Harborne's inclusion on the Sunday Times Rich List underscores his significant financial influence in both the cryptocurrency world and British politics.
