The British football super-agent who masterminded Gareth Bale's world record transfer to Real Madrid has vehemently denied a series of disturbing allegations made against him in a US court. Jonathan Barnett, 76, founder of the influential Stellar Group agency, is facing claims from an Australian woman who alleges he kept her as a "sex slave" and threatened her life over a six-year period.
Serious Allegations and Forceful Denial
In legal documents filed last month, the woman made a range of serious accusations relating to the period between July 2017 and November 2023. She claimed Barnett "forced me to work in servitude to him", used "threats to harm me and my children", and "exerted control over my life as his sex slave". The filing also alleged he kept footage of her "engaging in humiliating acts and self-harm".
Barnett's response, submitted yesterday, rejects all claims in their entirety. His legal filing argues that the woman had "no difficulty terminating the relationship after I refused to pay her the additional amounts she demanded from me". He described the allegations as "false and absurd", adding: "Plaintiff's suggestion that she was controlled by me and unable to leave the relationship is preposterous. Plaintiff could have voluntarily terminated our relationship at any point."
Legal Strategy and Jurisdictional Challenge
The former agent is seeking to have the case dismissed in the United States, arguing that he never met nor knowingly sent communications to the woman while she was in the country. This jurisdictional challenge forms a key part of his defence strategy against the allegations that have emerged from the US court system.
A Career at Football's Pinnacle
Jonathan Barnett was one of football's most powerful agents until his retirement, representing some of the sport's biggest names. His client roster included Welsh superstar Gareth Bale, England internationals Jack Grealish and Ashley Cole, and former striker Peter Crouch. The transfers he negotiated for both Bale and Grealish set new British record fees at the time of their completion.
Earlier in his distinguished career, Barnett also worked with cricketing legends including Brian Lara, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, as well as heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis. His agency, Stellar Group, which he founded and built into a major force in sports representation, was eventually sold to ICM Partners before being acquired by entertainment giant Creative Artists Agency.
The case continues to develop in the US legal system, with Barnett maintaining his complete innocence against all allegations while seeking to have the matter dismissed on jurisdictional grounds. The serious nature of the claims has drawn significant attention to the previously retired agent's past activities and relationships.
