John Lewis Chairman's Pay Rise Coincides with Significant Job Reductions
The new chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, Jason Tarry, has accepted a substantial pay increase and bonus package while the company implemented widespread job cuts, according to recent financial disclosures. Tarry, who assumed leadership in September 2024, saw his basic salary rise by 21 percent to £1.2 million, up from his predecessor Sharon White's £990,000 base rate.
Compensation Details Amid Workforce Reductions
In addition to the salary increase, Tarry received a £22,700 bonus equivalent to two percent of his salary, with additional payments bringing his total remuneration to nearly £1.6 million for the last fiscal year. This compensation package unfolded as the John Lewis Partnership, which operates both John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, eliminated 3,300 positions between January 2025 and January 2026.
The workforce reduction saw total employment across the partnership decline from 69,000 to 65,700 employees. Specifically, John Lewis shed 1,500 jobs while Waitrose cut 1,800 positions from its payroll during this period.
Leadership Transition and Cultural Overhaul
Tarry joined John Lewis after leading Tesco UK, replacing Sharon White who served as the shortest-serving chair in the company's history. White's tenure had been marked by store closures, job reductions, and the temporary abandonment of the retailer's "never knowingly undersold" pricing promise.
Analysts initially welcomed Tarry's appointment, anticipating he would transform what some described as the retailer's "social club" culture. However, recent controversies have emerged, including Waitrose's dismissal of an employee who confronted a shoplifter attempting to steal Easter eggs from a Clapham store.
Financial Performance and Bonus Restoration
Despite the workforce reductions, the partnership reported improved financial results. The company recorded a £134 million profit for the year ending January 2025, representing a six percent increase from the previous year. Sales grew five percent to reach £13.4 billion during the same period.
In March, the partnership restored its staff bonus program after controversy surrounding its reduction. The company will distribute a two percent bonus to all partners this year, which management states equates to approximately one week's pay for most employees.
Failed Build-to-Rent Venture Write-Off
The retailer's accounts also revealed a £22 million write-off related to its abandoned build-to-rent housing initiative. The company scrapped the venture in February, citing significantly changed economic circumstances compared to when the program launched in 2020.
The failed project, which could have developed up to 10,000 rental homes, prompted calls for government intervention in rental housing investment. Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds described the cancellation as a "major blow" to Labour's housebuilding ambitions.
The write-off included operating expenses for architectural designs, planning applications, and site preparation costs associated with the terminated program.
