Eamonn Holmes Forced to Step Down from Manchester United Foundation Board After 19 Years
Eamonn Holmes Leaves Manchester United Foundation Board

Eamonn Holmes has reportedly been forced to step down from his long-standing role on the board of the Manchester United Foundation after 19 years of service. The 66-year-old television personality, who has faced significant health challenges in recent months, resigned from his position as a director on March 1, according to Companies House records. No public statement has been made regarding his departure.

Mandatory Break Policy Cited

An insider told the Daily Mail that the move was due to a standard practice limiting board members to nine consecutive years to maintain independence. Although the rule is not strictly enforced, the current board chair implemented a mandatory break, leading to Holmes stepping aside. The source noted that Holmes had served 18 years, exceeding the typical two-term limit.

Holmes, a lifelong Manchester United fan who attended his first match in 1972, has often spoken about his friendship with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In a 2013 interview with The Sun, he expressed his gratitude for being on the board, saying, 'I get access to the boardroom and the directors' box... I pinch myself every night and day that I am at Old Trafford in that capacity.'

Uncertain Return

The insider indicated that it is unclear whether Holmes will return to the board, as the length of the enforced break remains unknown. 'It is ultimately out of Eamonn's control,' the source added.

Health Update

Holmes was rushed to hospital in April after being found unconscious at home, reportedly suffering a stroke. His son, Declan Holmes, provided an update, saying his father was 'doing ok given the circumstances.' Holmes later shared a photo on social media of a handmade 'get well soon' card from his granddaughters, captioning it with a misspelled message: 'I will do my best to get well SOOM.'

His girlfriend, Katie Alexander, also posted a message on Instagram: 'What a week. Prayer, prayer each day.' Holmes has faced ongoing health issues since 2012, when he suffered three slipped discs.

Metro has contacted Manchester United Foundation and Holmes's representative for comment.
