The UK's audit regulator has fined and banned an audit firm for serious failures in its work for companies linked to the Gupta metals empire, in a landmark enforcement action.
Regulator's findings
The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) imposed a fine of £1.5 million on the firm and banned it from accepting new audit clients for two years. The FRC found that the firm failed to challenge management properly and did not obtain sufficient evidence to support its audit opinions for several Gupta-linked entities.
According to the FRC, the misconduct involved audits of financial statements for the 2017 and 2018 financial years. The regulator said the firm's work fell "significantly short of the standards expected."
Impact on the Gupta empire
The Gupta family, which controls a global metals and mining network, has faced increased scrutiny after the collapse of a major UK steelmaker. The FRC's action is part of a broader crackdown on audit quality in the UK.
The firm's managing partner said: "We accept the FRC's findings and have taken steps to improve our audit processes. We apologise for the failings identified."
Broader context
The FRC has been under pressure to tighten oversight after a series of corporate scandals. This case marks one of the strongest penalties imposed on a smaller audit firm.
