Sony to End PlayStation Disc Games by 2028, Going Digital-Only
Sony Ends PlayStation Disc Games in 2028, Goes Digital-Only

Sony announced on Wednesday that it will cease releasing new video games for the PlayStation console on disc starting January 2028, marking a complete shift to digital downloads. The company cited changing consumer preferences as the driving force behind the decision.

Digital-Only Future for PlayStation

In an official statement on the PlayStation blog, Sony said: "Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only." This means gamers will need to download titles directly from Sony's PlayStation Store or obtain a download code when purchasing from a retailer.

The announcement comes amid the upcoming exclusively digital release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is predicted to become one of the biggest-selling cultural products of all time. The lack of a physical disc has caused consternation among some gamers, with complaints on social media about the elimination of a secondhand market for the title.

Sony clarified that the shift "has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format." The company began its move towards digital downloads in 2020 with the launch of the PlayStation 5, which offered a disc-less version.

"This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," the company said. "We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans."

Consumer Trends and Industry Impact

Piers Harding-Rolls at Ampere Analysis noted: "The purchasing trends of gamers are clear." He highlighted that in 2013, when the PS4 launched, only 13% of game sales were digital, but that figure had risen to nearly 80% by 2025.

Despite the clear trend, some gamers expressed disappointment. Content creator Conkerax described the move as "a catastrophe" on YouTube.

Harding-Rolls added: "Inevitably there will be concerns from PlayStation gamers around various aspects of this announcement including choice, accessing older physical games on new consoles, the ability to collect physical games and game preservation." He also noted that the shift towards digital would negatively impact specialist game retailers and the secondhand market.

Speculation on PlayStation 6

The announcement renewed speculation about the next-generation PlayStation 6 console. Daniel Ahmad at Niko Partners, a video game market research firm, said Sony's announcement "pretty much confirms PS6 will be digital only."
