Sony Angry at Xbox Over Halo Trailer Pulled From State of Play

Sony is reportedly furious with Microsoft after a trailer for Halo: Campaign Evolved was removed from the most recent State of Play broadcast, according to insider Michael Beckwith. The controversy stems from Microsoft's decision to pivot back to console exclusivity, a move that has not only upset fans but also strained relations between the two gaming giants.

Microsoft's Shift Back to Exclusives

The biggest revelation from the latest Xbox showcase was Microsoft's reversal of its multiplatform strategy. The company announced that new Xbox console exclusives would return, starting with Gears Of War: E-Day later this year. This came as a shock, as many expected E-Day to launch on PlayStation 5, especially given that a remaster of the original Gears Of War arrived on Sony's console last year.

While E-Day was never officially confirmed for PlayStation 5, a new report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier suggests that a PlayStation 5 version was indeed in development. According to sources familiar with Xbox's current strategy, the decision to cancel the PlayStation 5 version was made by Asha Sharma, who became head of Xbox in February. The change was reportedly kept secret, known only to a limited number of people.

Insider Reports and Denials

Bloomberg's sources claim that even many Xbox employees were surprised by the exclusivity announcement. This aligns with comments from Aaron Greenberg, Xbox's vice president of games marketing, who denied that the change was last-minute. However, evidence suggests otherwise: a PlayStation 5 logo was spotted in Gears Of War: E-Day promo artwork on a now-private Xbox podcast video, and the PEGI ratings board listed a PlayStation 5 version until after the showcase. Retailers had also prepared to open pre-orders for PlayStation 5 copies, indicating Microsoft kept its plans secret even from partners.

Matt Searcy, studio creative director at The Coalition, told Eurogamer that a PlayStation 5 version was never discussed. "We never talked about it. It was never changed," Searcy said, adding that "Gears as an exclusive makes a ton of sense."

Halo Trailer Pulled From State of Play

Regarding the Halo trailer, it is believed to be the story trailer uploaded to the PlayStation YouTube channel days earlier. Sony was reportedly unhappy with the disruption to its showcase schedule. Bloomberg's sources suggest the decision has potentially damaged the working relationship between Sony and Microsoft, with Sony now distrusting Microsoft's commitment to its plans.

This incident follows Sharma's apology for including other platforms' logos in Xbox showcases, suggesting Microsoft is embarrassed by its multiplatform releases. Notably, the PlayStation 5 port of Forza Horizon 6 was absent from State of Play, despite being a guaranteed hit. Bloomberg's report does not confirm that Microsoft pulled it, but the omission is curious given the success of Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5.

Microsoft previously boasted about being the biggest publisher on the PlayStation Store, but under Sharma's leadership, the focus has shifted back to exclusives. While this pleases some Xbox fans, the PlayStation 5 remains the more popular console, and withholding games like Forza Horizon 6 could hurt Microsoft's bottom line. The ongoing policy U-turns and embarrassment over being a multiplatform publisher are damaging Microsoft's reputation as an industry leader.
