Outdoor dining boom expected as homeowners invest in gardens

New research has revealed that nearly nine in 10 homeowners in the UK are planning to dine al fresco this summer, with many investing in garden upgrades to make the most of the warmer weather. The study, conducted by gardening retailer Primrose, found that 89% of homeowners intend to eat outdoors at least once a week during the summer months.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults highlighted a significant shift towards outdoor living, with 42% of respondents planning to spend money on garden improvements. Among those, the average spend is expected to be around £250, with popular purchases including new garden furniture, barbecues, and lighting to create an inviting outdoor dining space.

Key drivers behind the trend

The research indicates that the trend is driven by a desire to enjoy the British summer, with 67% of respondents saying they find eating outdoors more relaxing. Additionally, 54% said they enjoy the social aspect of al fresco dining, while 48% cited the fresh air and change of scenery as key motivators.

According to Primrose, the findings suggest that the pandemic has permanently altered how people use their gardens. “The last few years have made us all appreciate our outdoor spaces more than ever,” said a spokesperson for the company. “People are now seeing their gardens as an extension of their home, and they want to make them comfortable and stylish for entertaining.”

Regional variations and popular activities

The study also uncovered regional differences in outdoor dining habits. Homeowners in London were found to be the most likely to eat al fresco, with 94% planning to do so, followed by those in the South East (91%) and the North West (90%). In contrast, those in the East Midlands were the least enthusiastic, with only 82% intending to dine outdoors.

When it comes to preferred meals, barbecues remain the most popular choice, with 73% of respondents planning to fire up the grill. Salads and lighter meals were favoured by 58%, while 34% said they would enjoy a full three-course dinner outside. Drinks also play a key role, with 62% planning to host garden parties or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening sun.

Impact on garden product sales

The surge in demand for outdoor dining is expected to boost sales of garden products. Primrose reported a 35% increase in searches for garden furniture compared to last year, with dining sets and parasols among the most sought-after items. Sales of barbecues have also risen by 28%, while outdoor lighting and heaters have seen a 22% increase in demand.

The trend is not limited to homeowners, as renters are also getting involved. The research found that 76% of renters plan to dine outdoors this summer, although they are less likely to invest in permanent garden upgrades. Instead, they favour portable items such as folding chairs and tables.

Expert advice for al fresco dining

To help homeowners make the most of their outdoor spaces, gardening experts recommend investing in quality furniture that can withstand the elements. “It’s important to choose materials that are durable and easy to clean, such as aluminium or rattan,” said a Primrose spokesperson. “Adding cushions and throws can also make the space more comfortable, while string lights or lanterns create a cosy atmosphere.”

The research also suggests that many homeowners are planning to grow their own herbs and vegetables for summer dining, with 27% saying they would use home-grown produce in their al fresco meals. This reflects a broader trend towards sustainable living and a desire to eat fresh, seasonal food.

With the summer season approaching, the findings indicate that outdoor dining is set to become a staple of British life. As the spokesperson concluded, “Our gardens are no longer just for gardening – they’re for living, entertaining, and making memories.”
