Presenter's Hasty Exit Leaves Viewers Baffled
Channel 4 news presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy caused confusion among viewers on Wednesday evening when he abruptly ended the broadcast by racing off camera. The 56-year-old broadcaster, who has been with Channel 4 since 1998 and is the network's second-longest-serving presenter after Jon Snow, tore off his microphone and earpiece while walking swiftly away as the closing music played.
“That’s it for this evening. We’re back at 7 tomorrow night,” he said hurriedly. “Until then, gotta go – bye!” he added with a smirk before disappearing from view. The uncharacteristically rushed sign-off contrasted sharply with his usual composed and professional demeanor.
Social Media Reacts to the Unexpected Sign-Off
Viewers took to social media to share their amusement. One user, @jonoread, posted on X: “When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go,” along with a clip of the moment. The same user later revealed the reason behind Guru-Murthy's haste: “(To be fair he was rushing off for the football…!)” Another user, @joshuanesbit, replied simply: “Valid.”
The timing coincided with England's World Cup semi-final match against Argentina in Atlanta, a game that drew a peak audience of 24 million, making it the most-watched live television moment of the year across all broadcasters. It was also the biggest live TV audience for a single broadcaster since the Euro 2020 final between Italy and England.
England's Heartbreaking Defeat
Despite an early 1-0 lead, England ultimately lost 2-1 to Argentina, ending their hopes of tournament glory. Manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism for his tactics but defended his decisions, citing a weakness in English football “DNA” regarding ball possession under pressure. “In this moment, my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us,” Tuchel said. He added that the team failed to regain momentum after falling behind.
England still has a chance to secure a bronze medal if they defeat France in Saturday's third-place match.
Memorable Moments from a Dramatic Tournament
The World Cup has provided several notable broadcasting and celebrity moments, including Victoria Beckham's seemingly bored expressions in the quarter-finals, Emma Hayes hitting back at accusations of “sexism” in ITV's coverage, and Gary Lineker making a dig at the BBC following his departure from Match of the Day. Pundit Alexi Lalas also stunned his co-hosts by calling James Corden a “full kit w***er.”
The final between Argentina and Spain is set for Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium, with kickoff at 8pm BST after a closing ceremony at 6.30pm BST. In a break from tradition, the halftime break will be extended to 25 minutes to accommodate a Super Bowl-style performance featuring Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, and BTS, curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin. The halftime show will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million (£74.3 million) to improve children's access to education and football.
