3 in 10 holidaymakers think crisps taste better abroad

A new survey has found that three in 10 British holidaymakers believe crisps taste better abroad, with many citing unique flavours and higher quality ingredients as reasons. The study, conducted by travel agency On the Beach, polled 2,000 UK adults and revealed that 30% of respondents think crisps from other countries are superior to those available in the UK.

Why do crisps taste better abroad?

According to the survey, 45% of those who prefer foreign crisps said the flavours are more interesting and varied. Popular international brands like Pringles and Lays were praised for their unique offerings, such as paprika, sour cream and onion, and even exotic tastes like wasabi or shrimp. Meanwhile, 22% of respondents cited better quality ingredients, and 18% said the crisps are less greasy.

UK brands fall short

The survey also highlighted that some classic UK brands are not as well-received overseas. Walkers, Quavers, and Monster Munch were among the brands that holidaymakers found lacking when compared to their international counterparts. One respondent said, "I love trying different crisp flavours when I'm on holiday. The paprika ones in Spain are amazing, and you just can't get that here." Another added, "I always bring back a few bags of my favourite foreign crisps to enjoy at home."

Impact on holiday habits

The trend has influenced holiday habits, with 12% of respondents admitting they have chosen a holiday destination based on the local crisp flavours available. Additionally, 8% said they have shipped foreign crisps back to the UK to satisfy their cravings. The survey also found that younger generations are more likely to prefer foreign crisps, with 38% of 18-24 year olds agreeing they taste better abroad, compared to just 18% of those aged 55 and over.

Expert commentary

Lucy Smith, a spokesperson for On the Beach, commented: "It's fascinating to see how much of an impact local snacks can have on our holiday experiences. Crisps are a simple pleasure, but the variety and quality abroad clearly leave a lasting impression on British travellers." She added, "Whether it's the exotic flavours or the higher quality ingredients, it seems many of us are becoming crisp connoisseurs when we travel."
