Tragic Kayaking Incident Claims Young Woman's Life
A 20-year-old woman has tragically died following a kayaking incident on the River Tees in Barnard Castle, according to Durham Constabulary.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon after reports emerged of a kayaker in difficulty. The woman's body was recovered from the river two hours after the initial alert.
Major Emergency Response
Durham police confirmed they received calls expressing concern for the kayaker's welfare just before 2pm. A significant multi-agency operation immediately swung into action.
The extensive search and recovery mission involved County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, North East Ambulance Service, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Additional support came from the Coastguard and the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.
Family Receiving Support
In an official statement, Durham police confirmed that the young woman's family have been informed of her death and are currently receiving support from specially trained officers.
The incident occurred on Saturday 16 November 2024 in the historic market town of Barnard Castle, a popular destination for outdoor activities in County Durham.
