Emma Raducanu's preparations for the first Grand Slam of the year have suffered a significant setback following a surprising defeat in Tasmania. The British number one, who was the top seed at the Hobart International, was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Australian wildcard Taylah Preston.
A Dismal Display in Difficult Conditions
The match, played under challenging, rainy skies, saw the 2021 US Open champion produce a performance well below her best. Preston, ranked 204th in the world, secured a straight-sets victory, winning 6-2, 6-4. Frequent rain delays disrupted the flow of the contest, but it was the 20-year-old Australian who adapted far better to the stop-start nature of the evening.
Upon the restart after an early delay, Raducanu's game was littered with unforced errors. She struggled to find any rhythm or consistency from the baseline, allowing Preston to confidently dictate the rallies. The young Australian, a former top-10 junior, played with freedom and aggression, out-hitting her more celebrated opponent for the majority of the encounter.
Preston Seizes Her Moment
While Raducanu's level was undeniably poor, the result also highlighted a coming-of-age performance from Taylah Preston. This marks the most significant victory of her nascent professional career. She maintained her attacking intent throughout, even when Raducanu briefly held a lead in the second set. Her clean, powerful shot-making ultimately proved too much, and she closed out the match with minimal resistance in the decisive moments.
For Raducanu, the loss represents her fourth-worst defeat by ranking since her breakthrough in 2021. She showed a slight improvement in the second set by reducing her error count, but she lacked the necessary patience and fighting spirit to turn the match around.
A Daunting Australian Open Draw Awaits
Raducanu will now travel to Melbourne for the Australian Open, where she is the 28th seed. Her first-round opponent will be Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew. However, a formidable challenge potentially looms in the third round. Should she progress, Raducanu could face the world number one and two-time champion, Aryna Sabalenka.
She is one of four British women in the main draw. Katie Boulter faces a particularly tough opener against the in-form 10th seed, Belinda Bencic. Sonay Kartal meets 31st seed Anna Kalinskaya, while Francesca Jones plays Polish qualifier Linda Klimovicova.
In the men's draw, three British players will compete. Cameron Norrie, the 26th seed, faces Benjamin Bonzi, with a potential third-round clash against Alexander Zverev. Jacob Fearnley meets Kamil Majchrzak. They were joined by Arthur Fery, who qualified for the main draw without dropping a set, and will make his debut against 20th seed Flavio Cobolli.
