The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield opened the World Snooker Championship with a poignant tribute to the late John Virgo, as a minute's applause echoed through the iconic venue on Saturday morning. The former BBC commentator, who passed away in February at the age of 79, was remembered by players, officials, and fans alike, with Ken Doherty, MC Rob Walker, and others leading the emotional homage.
A Legend Remembered
John Virgo, who won the UK Championship in 1979 and reached the World Championship semi-finals that same year, enjoyed an 18-year professional playing career. However, it was his transition to broadcasting that cemented his legacy in the sport. Joining the BBC in 1994, Virgo's distinctive voice became a staple of snooker coverage for three decades, famously punctuated by his catchphrase, "Where's the cue ball going?" His contributions were celebrated at a memorial service at Sheffield Cathedral on Thursday, attended by the sport's great and good.
Champion's Nervous Start
As tradition dictates, the 17-day tournament commenced with defending champion Zhao Xintong taking to the table. The Chinese player, who triumphed over Mark Williams 18-12 in the 2025 final, faced a challenging start against qualifier Liam Highfield. Zhao secured a narrow 5-4 lead after the opening session, but his performance was marked by uncharacteristic nerves.
Zhao began positively, winning the first two frames, but Highfield, a 35-year-old who has never won a match in the main tournament, fought back to claim a close third frame. Zhao responded with a break of 124 to restore his two-frame advantage, yet Highfield demonstrated resilience by taking three of the next four frames to level the match. In the end, Zhao managed to clinch the final frame of the session, maintaining a slight edge.
Other Table Action
On the adjacent table, Zhang Anda also gave Chinese fans reason to cheer, establishing a 5-3 lead over Mark Allen. This early dominance suggests a strong showing from Chinese contenders in this year's championship, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the tournament's opening rounds.
The World Snooker Championship continues to unfold at the Crucible, with updates expected as players vie for the prestigious title. The tribute to John Virgo served as a heartfelt reminder of the sport's rich history and the personalities who have shaped it, setting a reflective tone for the competition ahead.
