Chang Bingyu's Perfect Snooker Whitewash Stuns Shaun Murphy at Welsh Open

In a breathtaking display of precision and skill, Chang Bingyu produced what many are calling the greatest performance in snooker history, whitewashing Shaun Murphy 4-0 at the Welsh Open. The 23-year-old Chinese star did not miss a single pot, knocking in four century breaks to leave the former world champion in awe.

A Match of Unprecedented Dominance

Chang's victory was nothing short of perfection. He amassed a staggering 524 points to Murphy's solitary one, with breaks of 130, 136, 119, and 130. While four centuries in a best-of-seven match have been achieved before, Chang's 100% pot success rate set a new benchmark. Murphy, who potted only one ball in the entire match, praised the young player's display as the best he has ever witnessed in a match of that length.

'That's the best performance in a best of seven match I've ever seen,' Murphy told the BBC. 'If that was Ronnie O'Sullivan or Judd Trump it would be on the news. It was quite literally the best performance I've ever witnessed. I've got nothing but good things to say. What a performance. What a player.'

Murphy humorously noted his limited involvement, saying, 'Did I have 10 shots in the match? I'm not sure. Two of them were break-offs, one long red. I only potted one ball. It was a good shot! I love coming to Llandudno, but it has been a very short trip.' He added that the defeat was easier to take because 'there was only one man playing.'

Chang's Humble Reaction and Background

Chang admitted he did not expect to beat Murphy, let alone deliver such an unplayable performance. 'Today it's really incredible, I've never played so well in a match. It's a performance that exceeded my expectations,' he said. 'I really didn't expect to beat him, but after a few shots in the first frame I calmed down a bit and found my form.' Despite the triumph, Chang remained grounded, acknowledging a gap between himself and the sport's top players.

Reanne Evans, the 12-time women's world champion, went further, declaring it the best performance ever on a snooker table. 'That has got to be the best performance ever on a snooker table,' she said on BBC Wales. 'He was never in trouble. Not only did he make the centuries, his touch play, his long potting, his positional play, his cannons, his ability to see the shots straight away. He never double-checked any shot, he just got down and hit the ball. It was fantastic.'

Rise, Fall, and Resurgence of Chang Bingyu

Chang's journey to this moment has been marked by both promise and controversy. A prodigious talent, he won the 2018 IBSF World Snooker Championship at age 16 and turned professional in 2019. However, his career was disrupted by the global pandemic and a match-fixing scandal in 2022. Chang admitted to fixing a match against Jamie Jones under pressure from Liang Wenbo, who received a lifetime ban. He was given a two-year suspension, reduced from three years due to early admissions and remorse, keeping him out of snooker until December 2024.

Upon his return, Chang quickly regained his professional status by winning the Asia-Pacific Snooker Championship in April last year. He has since impressed, reaching the final of the Scottish Open in December. Chang attributes his resurgence to disciplined practice, spending long hours at academies in China and Sheffield under the guidance of his coach Li Jianbing.

'I was based at Coach Li's academy and the schedule was very structured, I would practise from 9am to around 8:30pm every day,' Chang explained. 'Everything was very disciplined, and he really helped me get into good form.' Now based in Sheffield, he continues rigorous training sessions, aiming to catch up with peers like Si Jiahui and Wu Yize. 'Over the past two years, I have gained perspective,' he said. 'Now I approach matches with a much calmer mindset. My goal is to catch up with players like Wu Yize and Si Jiahui.'

This victory at the Welsh Open not only showcases Chang's extraordinary talent but also signals his return as a formidable force in the world of snooker, leaving fans and experts alike in anticipation of what he might achieve next.
