England's rugby squad received an unexpected boost in their preparations for Saturday's showdown against New Zealand, as tennis star Emma Raducanu made a special appearance at their training base.
Elite Insight at Pennyhill Park
The former US Open champion visited Steve Borthwick's team at their Bagshot training facility on Tuesday, immersing herself in the squad's routine ahead of their first Twickenham encounter with the All Blacks in 13 years. Raducanu didn't just observe from the sidelines - she actively participated in training sessions, joining lineout practice and even testing her kicking skills alongside fly-half Marcus Smith.
According to England's head coach, the 22-year-old tennis prodigy shared valuable perspectives with the players, particularly engaging in deep conversation with captain Maro Itoje. Borthwick expressed his appreciation for having elite sportspeople visit the camp, noting how such interactions benefit his squad.
Learning From Champion Experience
Fin Baxter, who starts at loosehead prop against New Zealand, was particularly impressed by Raducanu's presence. The young forward highlighted how observing her handling of immense pressure provided valuable lessons for the entire squad.
Baxter revealed that players respectfully allowed Itoje and Raducanu to have their "big dogs of their sports" conversation, recognising the unique opportunity to learn from two elite athletes at the top of their respective games.
Moving Past Previous Controversy
The visit marks a significant moment given previous tensions between Raducanu and English rugby. In 2021, former coach Eddie Jones faced criticism for comments referencing the tennis star's struggles following her US Open victory, suggesting they illustrated the dangers of off-field distractions.
Raducanu subsequently declined an invitation to attend a match at Twickenham that autumn. However, Borthwick's current approach appears to have fostered a more positive relationship, with Raducanu willingly sharing her expertise about preparing for elite competition.
The England squad has been receiving multiple high-profile visitors this week, with Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler also addressing the team as they build towards what promises to be a physically demanding encounter against the All Blacks.
