In official documents obtained by City AM, PWR executive chair Genevieve Shore confirmed the landmark development. "We are pleased to confirm that PWR is inviting UK and Ireland based organisations to submit their interest in becoming part of the league's future," Shore stated. "This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic, fast-growing, world-class competition and play a meaningful role in shaping the next chapter of women's rugby."
Current Dominance and Growing Popularity
The West Country side Gloucester-Hartpury has established itself as the dominant force in PWR rugby, securing the last three consecutive titles and maintaining an unbeaten record this season. Notably, the team's core lineup includes several Welsh players, demonstrating existing cross-border connections within the league.
This expansion initiative coincides with a remarkable surge in women's rugby popularity across the United Kingdom. The momentum follows England's Red Roses capturing the Women's Rugby World Cup last year before a record-breaking crowd of 82,000 spectators at Allianz Stadium. The national team is now approaching a sell-out for their upcoming Women's Six Nations opening fixture against Ireland at the same prestigious venue in April.
Tender Timeline and Strategic Alignment
Organizations interested in joining the PWR have until the end of April to submit their expressions of interest, with further engagement and discussions scheduled to commence from May.
