London Broncos Endorse NRL Investment in Super League

In an exclusive development, the London Broncos rugby league team have publicly endorsed the proposed investment by Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) into the Super League. This move signals strong support from one of the UK's key rugby league clubs as discussions between the NRL and Super League representatives are set to take place later this month.

Australian League Eyes Stake in European Counterpart

Officials from the NRL, widely regarded as the wealthiest rugby league competition globally, are preparing for crucial talks with Super League representatives and other stakeholders in the sport. The Australian league is exploring the possibility of acquiring a stake in its European counterpart, a strategic move that could reshape the rugby league landscape.

English rugby league authorities have engaged Deloitte to assist in evaluating various options for this potential investment. The Australian ownership group of the London Broncos, which includes former Brisbane Broncos legend Darren Lockyer and mining magnate Grant Wechsel, has expressed firm support for the proposal.

Financial Improvement as Key Condition

Grant Wechsel, speaking exclusively to City AM, emphasized that the Broncos' backing is contingent upon the investment delivering tangible financial benefits to all clubs involved. "We definitely back the idea of the investment," Wechsel stated, "as long as the financial improvement is there for the clubs."

He elaborated on the Australian model, noting that NRL clubs receive not only the full salary cap but also an additional Aus $5 million annually to cover staff expenses beyond player salaries. "That's a huge head start out here and it's given the clubs a platform to grow the game, grow talent and improve performance," Wechsel explained.

While acknowledging uncertainty about the implementation details, Wechsel expressed confidence in the broader concept. "Money coming into the game and support from the biggest rugby league competition in the world makes sense if it can help grow the game in the UK," he said.

London Broncos' Super League Ambitions

Wechsel reiterated the London Broncos' aspiration to secure a place in the Super League before the season concludes, whether through an expanded team roster starting in 2027 or alternative pathways. Sources within senior Championship clubs have indicated a preference for promoting the Broncos promptly, citing significant budget disparities in the second tier.

However, Wechsel emphasized that any promotion deal must include guarantees from the sport's governing body that each team receives the full Super League salary cap of £2.1 million in central funding. "If the deal looks like the NRL makes a minority investment and brings whatever funds they're putting forward or TV funds, and that tallies up to an amount where all the clubs can get the full distribution and still grow the game, then that's the first priority," he added.

Long-Term Vision for Rugby League Growth

The Australian investor highlighted the potential long-term benefits of NRL involvement, suggesting that even if the Australian league eventually withdraws, the initial investment could establish a stronger foundation for UK rugby league. "Down the track, if that's worked and they want to pull back out, I'm sure there are options as to how long it's done for. But it seems in the short term to be a positive thing for the game," Wechsel noted.

He concluded by emphasizing the dual objectives of securing London's place in the Super League and leveraging NRL expertise to enhance the sport's overall health. "London needs to get into the Super League in 2027, whether the NRL are involved or not. But separately to that, the NRL is thriving in Australia. So if they can come and be involved and boost either the broadcast deal or a combination of the broadcast deal and their own injection of funds, and bring that to the game and help it grow and thrive rather than just survive, then it's going to be good for the whole game and obviously London's going to be a beneficiary of that."
