Finn Russell in Advanced Talks to Join Matchroom Talent Roster
Scotland rugby union standout Finn Russell has engaged in substantive discussions with Matchroom about potentially signing with the multi-sport promoter's newly established talent agency division. This development follows closely on the heels of England's Henry Pollock joining the Eddie Hearn-led organization, signaling Matchroom's strategic expansion into rugby representation.
London Meetings Signal Serious Intent
City AM has learned that the Bath fly-half, who played a pivotal role in his club's triple-trophy winning campaign last season, participated in talks with Matchroom representatives in London over the recent weekend. These negotiations occurred shortly after Eddie Hearn publicly identified Russell as one of the few rugby players he could readily name, highlighting the promoter's growing interest in the sport.
Eddie Hearn confirmed the discussions while maintaining that no formal agreement has been reached, stating: "There's nothing signed or agreed with Finn Russell, but I'm also aware he's one of the greatest players in the world, and he's a fantastic ambassador and a great personality."
Matchroom's Rugby Expansion Strategy
The potential acquisition of Russell represents a significant step in Matchroom's deliberate foray into rugby talent management. This initiative gained momentum during the Six Nations tournament when Hearn commented on rugby's untapped commercial potential. The subsequent signing of Northampton Saints back-row Henry Pollock established the agency's first major rugby client.
Both Russell and Pollock rank among European rugby's most recognizable figures, with Pollock particularly noted for his boisterous on-field persona that has drawn both criticism and praise. Many former professionals have welcomed this approach, arguing that distinctive personalities are essential for rugby's broader appeal and commercial success.
Growing Interest from Rugby Players
Hearn revealed that the new talent division has already attracted considerable attention from athletes across sports, telling The i Paper: "We've probably had 30 or 40 players reach out [in total]." The division launched last month with high-profile signings including UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall and Pollock, following the departure of long-time Hearn associate Conor Benn to UFC boss Dana White's Zuffa Boxing.
Financial Backdrop of Expansion
Matchroom's expansion into rugby representation coincides with strong financial performance for the parent company. Recently released accounts for Matchroom Holdings Limited show turnover increased to £225.5 million for the year ending 30 June 2025, up from £218.3 million the previous year. Profits rose to £44 million from £40.5 million, with darts identified as a primary growth driver, particularly through the professional circuit featuring teenage double world champion Luke Littler.
Neither Matchroom nor representatives for Finn Russell provided additional comments when approached regarding the ongoing negotiations. The potential signing would mark a significant milestone in the convergence of professional rugby with broader sports entertainment representation.
