British cyclist Adam Yates has been forced to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia after sustaining a concussion in a massive crash on stage two. The 33-year-old rider from UAE Team Emirates was involved in an incident that brought down nearly 30 riders on the rain-soaked 221-kilometer route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria.
Injuries and Medical Update
Yates suffered heavy abrasions and a laceration to his left ear after hitting a barrier at high speed. Despite initially being cleared to continue, he battled on in a blood-stained jersey and finished almost 14 minutes behind the leading pack. However, subsequent medical assessments revealed delayed concussive symptoms, leading to his withdrawal before stage three.
Team doctor Adriano Rotunno stated: "Adam Yates suffered heavy abrasions and a laceration to his left ear. He was initially assessed on site for concussion and cleared to continue, but subsequently he has shown delayed concussive symptoms. He will not take the start of stage three today."
Teammates Also Injured
Yates' teammates Jay Vine and Marc Soler were also caught up in the crash. Vine sustained a concussion and an elbow fracture, while Soler suffered a pelvic fracture. All three riders are under medical observation and will return home in the coming days to continue their recovery.
Race Continues
The Giro d'Italia continues on Sunday with a 175-kilometer flat stage from Plovdiv to Sofia. After a rest day, the race heads to Italy for Tuesday's ride across Calabria from Catanzaro to Cosenza. This report will be updated after stage three.
