Adrian Newey Appointed Aston Martin F1 Team Principal for 2026
Adrian Newey becomes Aston Martin F1 team principal

Engineering Legend Takes the Helm at Aston Martin

In a dramatic leadership shake-up that has sent ripples through the Formula One world, Adrian Newey will assume the role of Aston Martin team principal starting from the 2026 season. The move represents a significant promotion for the celebrated engineer, who only joined the Silverstone-based team in September 2024 following his high-profile departure from Red Bull.

Management Reshuffle Follows Disappointing Season

The decision comes amid mounting pressure on current team principal and chief executive Andy Cowell, who has overseen a challenging period for the team. Reports of disagreements between Cowell and Newey, who serves as the team's managing technical partner, have circulated in recent months, fueling speculation about potential changes.

This management reshuffle effectively ends rumours linking former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner with a move to Aston Martin. Instead, the 66-year-old Newey will take charge of trackside operations while Cowell transitions to a newly created position as chief strategy officer.

Newey's Vision for Aston Martin's Future

Newey expressed enthusiasm for his expanded responsibilities, stating: "Over the last nine months, I have seen great individual talent within our team. I'm looking forward to taking on this additional role as we put ourselves in the best possible position to compete in 2026."

The British engineer highlighted the unique challenges ahead, particularly Aston Martin's transition to a works team status coinciding with major regulatory changes in Formula One. "We will face an entirely new position with Aston Martin now a works team combined with the considerable challenge presented by the new regulations," Newey added.

Regarding Cowell's new position, Newey emphasised its importance: "Andy's new role, focusing on the integration of the new power unit with our three key partners, will be pivotal in this journey."

The announcement, made on Wednesday evening, confirms Newey's long-term commitment to Aston Martin after his departure from Red Bull sparked intense competition for his services among multiple F1 teams. The engineering mastermind's promotion to team principal represents one of the most significant leadership changes in recent Formula One history and signals Aston Martin's ambitious plans for the 2026 season and beyond.
