Arsenal Midfielder Martin Zubimendi Shuts Down Real Madrid Transfer Speculation
Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi has firmly dismissed ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid, describing such talk as firmly "in the past" following the Gunners' progression to the Champions League semi-finals. The 27-year-old Spanish international made his comments shortly after Arsenal secured their place in the last four of Europe's elite competition with a tense aggregate victory over Sporting Lisbon.
Historic Achievement for Arsenal
Zubimendi's Player of the Match performance helped Arsenal reach consecutive Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the club's 140-year history. The achievement marks a significant milestone for Mikel Arteta's side, who now face Atletico Madrid in what promises to be a captivating two-legged tie later this month.
"I have no answer, but I haven't been paying much attention to all that," Zubimendi told Spanish radio station Cadena SER when questioned about persistent Real Madrid transfer rumors. "I think that's all in the past and I have other things on my mind. It's not a bad thing."
Tense Encounter Against Sporting
The quarter-final clash proved to be a largely cagey affair across both legs, with Arsenal ultimately progressing thanks to Kai Havertz's late strike in Lisbon after Wednesday's return fixture at the Emirates Stadium ended goalless. Despite starting brightly in north London, Arsenal faced nervous moments as Sporting grew into the game, with Geny Catamo hitting the post and Maxi Araujo going close from inside the area.
Arsenal's best opportunity fell to second-half substitute Leandro Trossard, whose header struck the woodwork from a corner as Sporting pushed unsuccessfully for a breakthrough in the closing stages. The result keeps Arsenal's hopes of a Premier League and Champions League double alive as they prepare for crucial domestic and European fixtures.
Looking Ahead to Atletico Madrid Challenge
Zubimendi, who joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad last summer in a deal worth approximately £56 million, acknowledged the challenge ahead against Atletico Madrid while downplaying the significance of Arsenal's 4-0 victory over Diego Simeone's side during the group stage.
"I already know them well, and they have a match against Real Sociedad this weekend, so we'll see how it goes," Zubimendi explained. "Anyway, I think they're in great form, with a lot of confidence and spirit, as is typical of Atletico Madrid. We already know them from the group stage but this will be different."
When asked if he would be watching this weekend's Copa del Rey final between Atletico Madrid and his former club Real Sociedad, Zubimendi responded enthusiastically: "To the death, to the death, obviously. I'll put it on at dinner."
Arteta Celebrates Historic Achievement
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was quick to highlight the historical significance of his team's achievement after the match, expressing pride in his squad's accomplishment.
"It's a great night, I'm so proud of everybody at the club," Arteta told Arsenal's official website. "Thank you to our supporters for the manner in which they followed the team. It's the first time we've reached the semi-finals consecutively in 140 years, so that tells you the difficulty and magnitude of what we've done."
Arteta added: "I think we don't realize it now, but we'll realize it in a few years, so don't take for granted what we've done. It's extremely difficult to achieve, and it's never been achieved by ourselves, so big gratitude to our players and everyone who's contributed to achieving that."
Preparation for Madrid Showdown
Looking ahead to the semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid, Arteta emphasized the need for thorough preparation while acknowledging his team's imperfections.
"We're not perfect, we want to improve in every area," Arteta admitted. "But we have two magical nights to play against Atletico and we're certainly going to prepare well for that. We'll take things from our win over Atleti in October and games they have played recently, but we're going to have to go to Madrid, be ourselves, and compete in the manner we have – and then we'll have a big chance to win it."
The first leg of the semi-final will take place at Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium on April 29, with the return fixture scheduled for the Emirates Stadium on May 5. Meanwhile, Real Madrid's reported interest in Zubimendi appears to have been firmly rebuffed by the midfielder himself, who remains focused on Arsenal's pursuit of European glory.
