West Ham to Honour Billy Bonds After His Death

The West Ham United family is in mourning following the announcement of the passing of their legendary former player and manager, Billy Bonds MBE, at the age of 79.

His family confirmed the sad news this weekend, describing him as a devoted father and a kind, loyal, and loving person.

A Lion-Hearted West Ham Career

Billy Bonds, or 'Bonzo' as he was affectionately known, is an immortal figure at West Ham United. He made a club-record 799 appearances for the Hammers over an incredible 21-year career.

As a formidable defensive midfielder and captain, he led the team to significant silverware, lifting the FA Cup twice and securing a Second Division title. His individual excellence was recognised with four Hammer of the Year awards and an MBE in 1988 for his services to football.

From the Pitch to the Dugout

Bonds' dedication to West Ham continued after his playing days ended. He took on the role of manager in 1990 and enjoyed a successful four-year stint.

In a remarkable achievement, he guided the club to promotion in his first season in charge. After a relegation in 1992, he masterminded an immediate return, leading West Ham into the newly formed Premier League in 1993.

He also had a period managing Millwall between 1997 and 1998.

Tributes and Planned Honours

In response to the loss, West Ham United has confirmed plans to honour their former leader. A period of appreciation will be held ahead of kick-off in today's Premier League fixture against Liverpool at the London Stadium.

The club has also announced that a more comprehensive tribute will take place at their next home game against Aston Villa on Sunday, December 14.

Football figures have been paying their respects. Former West Ham striker Tony Cottee posted on social media, calling Bonds "an incredible footballer, leader and captain but above all else a very humble and fantastic person."

The club's statement concluded: "Rest in peace Billy, our courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader."
