Tottenham Target £70.5m Porto Star Aghehowa as Striker Search Intensifies
Spurs eye £70.5m Porto striker Aghehowa

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made FC Porto sensation Samu Aghehowa their number one striking target as manager Thomas Frank looks to strengthen his attacking options within the next year.

The Dream Signing

According to sources close to the club, Spurs have zeroed in on the 21-year-old Nigerian international as their ideal candidate to lead the line in Frank's evolving system at N17. While former Brentford striker Ivan Toney remains a serious option, having moved to Saudi Arabia recently, it's Aghehowa who the North London club truly covet.

The young striker has been in sensational form since joining Porto in summer 2024, making 59 appearances and contributing to 40 goals with 36 strikes and 4 assists. His remarkable output has seen his value skyrocket, with Porto now demanding at least £70.5 million for his services.

January Move Unlikely

Despite Tottenham's strong interest, a winter transfer appears increasingly improbable. Club president Andre Villas-Boas has reportedly insisted that no price will be considered during the January window, making a summer 2026 move far more viable according to insiders.

One source told TEAMtalk: "Samu is the dream. January is a nightmare. Summer 2026 feels far more viable for a move."

The situation is complicated by competition from Premier League rivals, with both Chelsea and Manchester United credited with interest in the prolific forward. However, Spurs are currently showing the strongest determination to secure a deal.

Remarkable Rise in Value

Aghehowa's journey to becoming one of Europe's most sought-after strikers contains a fascinating twist. The striker very nearly joined Chelsea in 2024 after a £35 million deal had been agreed with Atletico Madrid, but the move collapsed when he failed a medical at Stamford Bridge.

Porto subsequently secured his signature for just £12 million - less than a third of what Chelsea had been prepared to pay. His current valuation of £70.5 million represents nearly a seven-fold increase in just 15 months, highlighting his extraordinary development in Portugal.

Meanwhile, alternative target Ivan Toney faces his own complications. The England international is currently earning £400,000 per week in Saudi Arabia and would need to accept a significant pay reduction to return to the Premier League, though his desire to feature in the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel could influence his decision.

Everton have also emerged as potential suitors for Toney, adding another layer to what promises to be an intriguing transfer saga as Tottenham seek to solve their striking needs.
