Eddie Howe Confirms Nick Pope Fit for Newcastle vs Man City Clash
Nick Pope Fit for Newcastle vs Man City

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has delivered a significant team news update, confirming that first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope is fit and available for Saturday's crucial Premier League encounter against champions Manchester City.

Major Boost as Pope Returns

The Magpies received a scare during their last outing, a 3-1 defeat at Brentford, when Pope was forced off with a head injury. The issue was serious enough for the 33-year-old shot-stopper to withdraw from the England squad during the recent international break, with Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale stepping in as his replacement.

However, addressing the media in his pre-match press conference, Howe provided a straightforward and positive assessment. 'Nick Pope has trained, and there’s no problems there,' the manager stated, offering reassurance to the St. James' Park faithful.

Pope's return is a substantial lift for a Newcastle side struggling for form. The team has managed just three wins from their opening 11 league games, leaving them languishing in 14th position and a mere two points above the relegation zone.

Positive News on Key Players

Howe's update extended beyond his number one goalkeeper, with several other players nearing returns. Full-back Tino Livramento, who has been sidelined since September with a knee injury, is poised for a comeback.

'He’s very close,' Howe said of Livramento. 'He’s trained in the international break which is great to see. He’s such an important player for us... I’d say he’s in good shape.'

There was also encouraging news regarding attacker Anthony Gordon, who is described as 'very close' and will be subject to a late fitness test, making him 'touch and go' for the City match.

Howe confirmed that Sandro Tonali, Nick Woltemade, and Joelinton are all fine, with the latter having shaken off a 'nasty knock' on his leg.

Absentees and Longer-Term Concerns

Not all the news was positive, however. Defender Dan Burn will definitely miss the match through suspension following his red card in the loss to Brentford.

Meanwhile, the wait continues for £50 million summer signing Yoanne Wissa to make his Newcastle debut. The forward is still recovering from a knee injury, and Howe admitted he does not have 'a clear, defined return date' for the player.

'He’s working well... almost entering a pre-season with them currently,' Howe explained, indicating a return to full training is the next hurdle.

Striker Will Osula is also set for a longer spell on the sidelines and may see a specialist regarding his injury, ruling him out for the next couple of games.

Newcastle will be hoping the return of their key goalkeeper and the potential boost from other returning players can help them upset the odds against a formidable Manchester City side.
