Manchester United have received a strong recommendation to pursue a £42 million Premier League midfielder to fill the significant void left by Casemiro's impending departure. Former Red Devils striker Louis Saha has specifically urged the club to target Newcastle United's Brazilian star Bruno Guimaraes as the ideal replacement for the outgoing veteran.
The Casemiro Departure Creates Midfield Void
Casemiro announced in January 2026 that he would be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season after four years at Old Trafford. While his time at the club has been marked by fluctuating form, his resurgence and impressive performances this season have established him as a world-class talent whose absence will create a substantial gap in United's midfield.
The Brazilian's imminent exit now makes recruiting a star midfielder a key priority for Manchester United, alongside their ongoing search for a new permanent manager. The club had already been in the market for central midfield reinforcements, having attempted to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton at the end of the previous summer transfer window.
Saha's Recommendation: Guimaraes as the 'Monster' Solution
Louis Saha, speaking to AceOdds, expressed his admiration for Casemiro while emphasizing the need for an aggressive, dictating presence in midfield. "I've always been a big fan and defender of Casemiro," Saha stated. "He was asked to do one too many roles in the last two years, but that's been cut and now he's settled and his role is defined. He's proved he's a world-class player."
The former United striker identified two specific targets who could fill the void: "United need aggressiveness and someone that will dictate the midfield. I see someone more like Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimaraes, who are two monsters in midfield."
Saha elaborated on why Guimaraes represents the ideal solution: "With players like Kobbie Mainoo, you need someone alongside him who has the experience and vision to manage the transition when Casemiro goes. You need that experience, directness and decisiveness. It'll be hard to replace."
The Frenchman cautioned against relying solely on younger talent: "If you bring in a young player, it's a disruption. It's great for the future, but you need experience. If Casemiro goes, I think a combination of Adam Wharton and Guimaraes would be great because Guimaraes is more of a captain."
Guimaraes: Newcastle's Pivotal Captain
Bruno Guimaraes, signed by Newcastle United for £42 million in 2022, has developed into a pivotal player for Eddie Howe's side and was appointed club captain in 2024. The 28-year-old Brazilian has contributed nine goals and four assists in the Premier League this season despite currently being sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Guimaraes remains under contract with Newcastle until June 2028, meaning any potential transfer would require significant negotiation between the two Premier League clubs. His leadership qualities and midfield dominance have made him one of the most respected players in the league.
Alternative Options and Transfer Speculation
While Guimaraes appears to be Saha's preferred target, the former United striker also mentioned his Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali as a viable alternative. The Italian midfielder has attracted reported interest from Arsenal and appears to have a growing number of admirers across the Premier League.
Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso hinted earlier this year that his client might consider a move from St James' Park if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League, which now seems increasingly likely. "Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League," Riso stated. "We'll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer."
Manchester United have also been linked with other midfield targets including Brighton's Carlos Baleba, who they attempted to sign previously, as well as English duo Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton. However, Saha's strong endorsement of Guimaraes as a ready-made, experienced replacement for Casemiro adds significant weight to the Brazilian's potential candidacy.
The coming summer transfer window promises to be crucial for Manchester United as they seek to rebuild their midfield following Casemiro's departure. With the club also searching for a permanent manager, their recruitment strategy will need to address both immediate needs and long-term planning as they aim to return to the pinnacle of English and European football.
