Manchester United have dismissed any possibility of selling Mason Mount this summer, despite reported interest from AC Milan and a mooted £21.5 million bid. The England international has been linked with a move to the Serie A side, where former Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim has taken charge and is reportedly keen on reuniting with the midfielder.
Mount's Injury Struggles and Amorim's Admiration
Amorim's tenure at Old Trafford was not successful, but he remained extremely complimentary of Mount as a player and how he would fit into his 3-4-3 formation. Persistent injury problems prevented Mount from being deployed as Amorim intended, yet the Portuguese coach continues to value the 27-year-old. However, according to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have no intention of selling Mount this summer, nor does the player want to push for a move.
Mount has been training in Spain over the summer break, following an individual fitness programme to ensure he is fully prepared for the new season. Pre-season training for some Manchester United players begins on July 9, with Mount expected to be involved.
Injury Record and Versatility
Injuries again hindered Mount last season, but his 23 Premier League appearances were the most he has managed in any of his three campaigns at Manchester United. While it seems unlikely he would become a regular first-choice starter under Michael Carrick next season, his versatility is a key asset. Mount is capable of playing centrally, in the number 10 role, and out wide if necessary.
The Red Devils face a much busier schedule next season, with a return to the Champions League and hopes for deeper runs in domestic cup competitions. A midfield revamp is already underway after Casemiro left on a free transfer, and a deal to bring in fellow Brazilian Ederson from Atalanta has been agreed.
Midfield Overhaul and Transfer Constraints
Another midfielder is expected to arrive, whether that is Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, Alex Scott from Bournemouth, or another target. However, Manchester United's transfer plans have been hit by the serious knee ligament injury Manuel Ugarte suffered while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup. Ugarte was on the transfer list this summer, but with months out of action, an exit during this window seems very unlikely. With the former Paris Saint-Germain player likely to stay, the funds available for another midfield option will be limited.
