Man Utd Eye Mateta as Crystal Palace Contract Talks Hit Stalemate
Man Utd on alert as Palace star's contract talks stall

Crystal Palace face a major battle to keep hold of their star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta after negotiations over a new contract reached a significant impasse, alerting Manchester United to a potential transfer opportunity.

Contract Stalemate and Growing Speculation

According to fresh reports, discussions between the French international and the South London club have hit a ‘sticking point’ primarily concerning the player's base salary. The 28-year-old forward, whose current deal is set to expire in 2027, has also been vocal about his ambition to compete in the Champions League, a level that Palace has historically struggled to reach.

This development has put several clubs, including Manchester United, on high alert. The Red Devils were previously linked with Mateta last summer before ultimately signing Benjamin Sesko for £74 million. However, with Sesko struggling to adapt during his initial months at Old Trafford, manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen to add another senior centre-forward to his squad.

Mateta's Meteoric Rise at Selhurst Park

Over the last two seasons, Mateta has transformed into one of the Premier League's most lethal marksmen. Under the guidance of manager Oliver Glasner, he has scored an impressive 33 goals in 62 appearances.

His prolific form has been instrumental in a golden period for the Eagles, helping the club secure its first major trophies in history – the FA Cup and Community Shield. This season, his goals have fired Palace to fifth place in the table and a spot in the Europa Conference League, where they are set to face Strasbourg.

A Pivotal Summer Looms for Palace

The situation places the Palace hierarchy in a difficult position. They must now decide whether to cash in on their prized asset next summer or risk losing him for free in 2027, mirroring the expected departure of captain Marc Guehi.

Interest in Mateta is not limited to Manchester. Clubs from Serie A are also monitoring the striker, whose public comments have done little to quell the speculation. ‘It’s natural, every ambitious player wants to reach that milestone,’ Mateta recently stated, referencing the Champions League. ‘Especially when you arrive in the national team and around you, there are only players who play in the Champions League... you want to reach that milestone.’

The summer of 2026 is shaping up to be a defining moment for Crystal Palace, with the futures of Mateta, England star Adam Wharton, manager Glasner, and Guehi all needing resolution.
