Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has singled out Luke Shaw for exceptional praise following Manchester United's vital 2-1 victory away at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Shaw Shines in Selhurst Park Comeback
United secured a crucial three points at Selhurst Park, coming from behind to win with second-half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount. The win, United's first at the ground in over five years, lifted Ruben Amorim's side to seventh in the Premier League table.
Deeney, selecting his BBC Team of the Week, was unequivocal in his assessment of Shaw's performance. "Luke Shaw was by far the best player on the pitch," Deeney stated. "It wasn't a great game at Crystal Palace, but he seems to be really thriving as that left-sided centre-back."
A Resurgent Force Under New Management
The England international's career at Old Trafford has been hampered by persistent injury problems, but he is currently enjoying one of his most consistent and impressive spells. Shaw has started all 13 of United's Premier League matches this season, becoming a cornerstone of Amorim's defence.
Deeney suggested that this sustained form could even propel Shaw back into the England setup ahead of next year's World Cup. "He's showing with fitness – and with United looking like they are probably going in the right direction – a late call-up for England may come," he added. Shaw, who has 34 caps, last played for the Three Lions over a year ago.
Looking Ahead to West Ham Clash
The comeback victory provides a platform for United as they prepare to host struggling West Ham United at Old Trafford on Thursday. The Hammers sit 17th, only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Ex-Arsenal and England winger Paul Merson, analysing the win for Sportskeeda, expects a confident United display. "I'm expecting goals, goals and more goals in this game. I don't expect West Ham to cause them major problems," Merson said. "Manchester United need some consistency and they will hope this result can spring them in the right direction."
