Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has delivered a significant fitness boost, confirming that key defender Marc Guehi and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta are both available for selection ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Positive News on Defensive Stalwart
There had been considerable concern for Marc Guehi after the Eagles' captain sustained a painful ankle injury during the Conference League victory over AZ Alkmaar a fortnight ago. The problem was severe enough to leave the 25-year-old centre-back on crutches and forced him to miss the subsequent goalless draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
His recovery also meant he was unable to join the England national team during the recent international break, despite initial hopes he would be fit. However, Glasner allayed any fears in his pre-match press conference on Friday, stating, 'Fortunately, Marc started training with us on Wednesday, so he did now three sessions. It’s good.'
Guehi's return is a major positive for a Crystal Palace side that has been exceptionally difficult to break down this season. The team has suffered only two league defeats, with only table-toppers Arsenal and Manchester City possessing a superior defensive record, a statistic to which Guehi has been instrumental.
Striker Cleared After Minor Scare
Glasner also provided an update on first-choice striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who returned from international duty with France carrying a minor knee issue. The manager was quick to reassure supporters that the problem is not serious.
'JP [Mateta] came back with a minor knee issue from [playing with] France, but trained today with no issues, so he’s also fit, so all good news,' Glasner confirmed.
In further positive news, forward Eddie Nketiah has trained fully throughout the week and will also be part of the squad travelling to the West Midlands. Glasner expressed his satisfaction with the overall condition of his team, noting, 'The players looked very good, very sharp today. The players are fit. We have a great mood, a great energy in the group.'
A Tough Test at Molineux
The match at Molineux Stadium will be the first in charge for Wolves' new manager, Rob Edwards. He replaces Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed in early November following a disastrous start to the season that has left the club bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from their opening 11 games.
While Wolves will be hoping for a 'new manager bounce', they face a formidable challenge against a confident and robust Crystal Palace side. Glasner's men will be looking to continue their impressive form and build on their solid start to the campaign, with a fully fit squad now at their disposal.
